I haven't read all through this. I'm in Brisbane, not sure where you are but I'm in Norman park.
I can give you some kits, nothing flash, some slim-line and keyrings to play with.
But I have lots of timber that is about the right size for pens, and I think, with your kids, you are going to need some timber the right size for spinning tops (not just fun to turn, but fun to play with for ages after!)

Good stuff Eliza ! I had a chat with Gavin today ,and he is completely gobsmacked by the responses to his post,it was not ,and is not asking for anything ,just telling it like it is .The generosity and big hearted offers are totally unexpected . That said he does need a bit of support with sundries ,we all know after the lathe and grinder and bandsaw and bench drill,it doesn't end there , and its all the lttle bits that add up ,bushes blanks kits polish sandpaper to mention a few.He now has a lathe as he posted earlier, not out of the box as yet , a bandsaw and hopefully a bench drill on the way ,got a grinder for sharpening tools ,so all the main ingredients are taken care of or on the way. The only thing I can think of is a linisher machine to save his "ozito" orbital sander from a quick demise . If anyone's thinking of upgrading then nows a good time hehe.Gavin did say where he lives but I forgot (oldtimers) but somewhere on the north side as far away from me as it gets .I have offered him a x-y axis vice which will cover the blank drilling (when he gets some drills) so there we are , some kits and wood first as nothing will get done without them hehe, and whatever comes along will be sure to find a good new home . Cheers ~ John .
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

hi all
I have been gob smacked by both the stories and the support and would like to do my bit.
I have PM'ed gavin but i will also offer what ever asistance i can to gavin and his family.
I am going to talk to the Wood'n'Workshop tomorrow and have a purchase order for some pen kits with bushes organised as soon as i speak to gavin.
these will be kits of his choosing.
I also have offered him a couple of tools i have sitting doing nothing.
This is not much by my standard, but times are tight and they are theirs if they want them.
I only wish i could do more, and maybe in the future I can.
keep it up guys and gals

Pen mill and stuff
I have a pen mill that I don't use that I am more than happy to see go to somebody who clearly deserves a go. I also am able to provide as many blanks for pens or whatever. I have been deeply touched by the generousity and kind heartedness of the wonderful members of this forum. This truely is what it is all about.

I spoke with gavin today.
he has been overwhelmed with the response. As john said, he was just happy to show of his work and did not expect or ask for the support which has been given. But it has been appriciated
I have organized to get them some kits and bushes to go with the timber they received this week.
I only hope he will post some of the pens up for all to see. And if they can sell a few, it may help to cover the cost of this woderful hobby.

excellent stuff selde! i've sent a box of pen blanks for them to play with so sounds like they'll be stocked up for a few more pens now. Can't wait to see the pens produced. It's been amazing watching this all unfold on the forum here. I'm so glad to be a part of this community.

John, it is not whether or not it is a worthwhile cause, but more that it is the right thing to do. And after speaking with Gavin on the phone today, it has only re-enforced that.
One can smile at the generosity of others, but there is a warm feeling of being a part of helping others. Especially when it is not asked for.

Just to recap a bit this is what is in the pipeline at this time
(Spoken for items )
CA glue - Thin and Med
20 pen kits - 3 styles with bushes
resin blanks - from Wood'n'Workshop
plans for a pen drilling stand - simple and easy to build.
some more pen kits and blanks offered by Eliza
Set of drills from Amos
an x-y axis drill vice from me ,and a surprise
some more blanks
Already received some blanks I believe
Gavin already has
6 piece turning tools
pen mill
lathe
dill press - long term loaner
bandsaw
timber blanks - quantity and type unknown.
If anyone has some bits for Gavin and is in Brisbane, Selwyn who lives nearby can do a pickup run on the weekend if needed.
Thanks Selwyn ,could be a long day hehe.
I will just point out in the interests of privacy for Gavin and his family (eg,no public email or address) that selwyn has offered to be a drop off or mail address by arrangement ,and if gavin wishes it that way,
By looking over this little pile of goodies its easy to see that the pens will soon be flying out of Gavins workshop hehe ! cheers to all John.G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!
