Learning
Hi All,
I am new to wood turning, I have been fortunate enough to get some time to play around over the break, thanks to the information in these forums I am starting to get more consistent with finishes, but still new at this. Attached are a few from the last couple days, if possible would someone be able to tell me what timber the top pen is? I bought a small piece from the Melbourne timber show last year it had lace written on it.
I may not post often, but reading the feedback and suggestions from the threads to continue to learn from everyone.
Cheers
Steve

Tanks Gab,
The pens are finished with shellawax, one or too I have tried CA only about 3 coats, but still working on managing timing for this, I have sanded down to 1200.
The stand I made out of a bit of timber I had in shed, drilled 16mm holes and then cut the face off to create the recessed areas, put onto the base on an angle to help the pens sit there, just a bit more playing around.

Nice going on the pens.
Looks like a good variety that you have tried. The finish that I am using is wipe on poly leaving this to dry before applying another coat. It might take me 3 - 5 days in regards to the finish that I apply.

keep trying with the CA. I'm no expert, but I have managed to get a few with pretty good finish with CA. youtube is your friend, I use the method David from Timberbits put up online. It seems to work well for me.
Cheers

Steve, certainly doing very well, and the stand is a great idea.
Top pen could be Lace She Oak.
Since you used Shellawax, go the next step and use Shellawax Glow.

They look good and you are getting more lathe time than me so I'm very jealous.
For me CA is worth the effort you just need to work out what works for you.Cheers Rum Pig

Thanks for the positive feedback, today I managed to get a CA finish I was happy with, bottom pen, the top one I tried some gluing pieces together to create a different type. Top pen is jarrah and spotted gum, bottom pen sassafras.
Thanks again everyone.

The pens are looking really good.
Just a suggestion with the photos, leave them at a higher resolution so that we can see your hard work better. About 800 in the longest direction comes up nicely on the screen.
Keep up the good work on the pens, it's great fun.Dallas
