I learnt something
Hi I learnt something... Turning pens are fun, but getting big orders are nice but not fun. (like 20 pens might not be a big order to some of you but to me it was) I like getting the order and the money was nice but making the same pen by 20 times gets very tedious. I am so looking forward to being able to play. It nicer to make something that you want to make when you want ot make then sell it then it is to make it to an order all the same. It's boring, at first it starts off enjoable towards the end it is very tedious. only three more to go and then I can play and I am so looking forward to do something new...Something i want to, I can honestly saying I am looking forward to posting them off so I don't have to see them again.
bye Toni

yeha i know the feeling, ive had orders of 15 + come in, and ure its good when you get the money for it, but making them can be a bit tiring... but its worth it.. u feel alot of satisfaction at the end of it, espically when u have a really satisfied customer!! keep up the good work!! :P

i do a lot of hand copy turning for my employer(finials, spindles, etc).i do find it tedious but once i get the first couple done and get into a groove, its all good. very good for learning control of the tool.nothing better though than to be able to put on a nice bit of wood and let it do the talking.
everything is something, for a reason:confused:

Yup. I've found that's true of everything I make, not just turning. The creativity is a large part of the fun, having the freedom to experiment with new shapes and being able to change things on the fly to get the best out of the wood.
But copy turning? [shudder] I'll leave that to the professionals... boring, boring, boring.
It's one helluva good way to hone your skills though! Quickly and accurately turning copies is one of the harder skills to master... and something most people don't bother learning. Funny that.

I dont know what youse lot are sooking about, try laying around 1000 bricks per day to see what boredom is all about.
I usually let my imaginary friends take over my brain for some fun.

As has been said before, repetitive turning is boring, but is one hell of a way to get good at it. Had an order for 150 perfume atomisers a while back, for a folk art teacher. Part of the exercise was to work out a way to streamline the process. I had a mandrel made up so that I could turn five at a time. Then had to work out a way to make 150 wooden discs to fit the cap. The worst one was for 320, 40mm spheres with a 12mm hole, to be used as caps. So I can comiserate Toni.
