    Default Leopard tree Pods

A few months ago I picked up a small bag of Leopard tree seed pods from a local car park , Finally got some time to chop and cast some ,turned this one today, not easy But worth the effort for a distinctive pattern cheers ~ John

Another beautiful pen John. That one will be very popular. I love the shape of the pods in the blank.

They are distinctive John. It's a great choice for colour too.

I have a driveway full of them, do you want any more of these little bas...errr...seed pods ?

Hehe, I couldn't even give any of these to Neil (dai -sensai) and he will cast anything including recycled dog food lol. But I would suggest that as well as pressure these would be better cast in Epoxy as they are a bit slippery and try to pop out of the acrylic castings. Cheers ~ John

    Turned out well

Not sure about the blue though, perhaps make your next one with that bright red resin of yours , or maybe a yellow pearlex

Cool casting! Goes well with the colored PR too!!!

Would you happen to have a "The pod looked like this before" photo? Guess I could google the pod, but figured maybe someone else is wondering too.....

That is a very distinctive and nice looking pen, would also love to see the same thing in different colours and combination. We don't get Leopard trees here but must try some of the local Callitris and Casuarina pods.

Possibly ,but these were the size I collected Quite hard and compact ,I cut one on the bandsaw to show they are quite solid with a small seed compartment

I've seen leopard tree pods in two lengths. Around here they all seem to be the smaller one like John's (about 30-50mm) with one or two seed cavities. Others I've seen are 100-130mm. Maybe it's soil type.

One of a pair of street plantings outside, looks like it has some type of die-back so maybe I can score some turning blanks. Another name is Brazilian Ironwood - anyone know the timber ?

Most of the timber is light and relatively boring, but many have a dark centre, that's the good stuff. Not sure why some have it and other's don't. Perhaps it is like Blackbean, that doesn't develop its dark centre till quite old, due to the very thick sapwood.
