really light or really dark coloured burl
I have a potential customer who wants a really pale timber pen - preferrably a burl. (something wavey )
Huon is not pale enough and too yellow
Maple burl and Alaskan yellow cedar are also no good
she wants something almost white I think
Has anyone tried to bleach burls? say bleach brown mallee burl?
Did it work?
The other option is a reall dark burl - didn't like Jarrah or Coolabah or Mallee
Zircote and Bocote were dark enough but not burls.
I suppose my other option is to try and dye some coolabah or mallee and see if I can get it darker.
Any suggestions for alternate timbers?
Anybody had any luck dying? I know edblysard did some recently but that was different colouring.regards

Use Red Mallee and seal it with Boiled Linseed Oil before coating with CA, it will come out very dark. Amos

Sounds like and excuse for an experiment... wonder how turning a burl (to nearly final thickness and then bleaching soaking in bleach would work? Would probably want to go for a polyurathane glue (waterproof at least) in the hope it doesn't break down. Other way to go might be try black japan or similar over an already dark one and see how that goes? Would the fuming method that others were using on Ebony (can't remember what Ebony?) work to darken other types of woods?
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

what sort of pen did she want, i have this piece of burl
i am guessing it is out of the cap part of the burl, but it does have some red on it
i have photographed each of the 4 sides for you
you would get a siera, elegant beauty, sketch pencil, but thats about it

thanks for the offer
this burl is a similiar colour to that which she has seen. So no go.
I'll try bleaching and dyeing on the weekend and see what happens.
I've some of ubeaut's dyes and this will be a good chance to try them outregards

no worries mate, its the lightest color i have
the other she may like - not that i have ever done it - would be to get some light colored burl caps and make them into worthless wood with some white resin

After bleaching the burl you could try adding some white pigment to the finish so in effect it becomes a transparent liming finish, it might whiten enough without obscuring too much of the burl.
