    Allan.

What you have appears to me to be some rough cut Silky Oak blanks...the attached photos of Silky oak blanks I have are identical material but they have been slightly dressed more than the ones you show..I tried to show how different each face appears dependant on which way you present it and to allow you to zoom in to see how different each appear.

If in any doubt, dress up the blanks you have left and compare them with these photos.

You will see that the grain looks different in each piece but that's more to do with from what part of the tree the cut was taken i.e. half sawn or quarter sawn and whether it's been dressed to show the grain and which way it is running in the light.

As for the markings you mention, I have no idea what they mean but hope it clears up your mystery wood for you

    Regards...........Lee

Lee, I think you have solved the mystery.

The sample shown at the bottom of the pic appears
to be an exact likeness of my blank.

You are right about them being rough sawn and your
pics highlight the variations in the grain according to cut etc.

Thanks to all who have endeavoured to provide a solution
... I can now put a label on the pen ... and sleep a little better.

    Default Banksia?

Could it be a banksia! The grain look right, the colour varies.

Snottygobble - the tree here in WA - does not have that type of grain, the colour is about right though.

You could be right Peter, it looks similar to other blanks
I have of Silky Oak but not quite the usual grain. Thanks.
Switch62: Hairy Oak aka Stringybark Sheoak or another variety of Sheoak.
Thanks to you also. It is nothing like the Hairy Oak I have
on hand but you could be right about being a Sheoak.
    Stuffy: Snottygobble:
I do have just one "Snottygobble" pen blank on hand which I received
from a friend in W.A. It was from a Snottygobble tree which is different
from the "Snottygobble" parasitic vine found here in Victoria. Will check
my pen blank supply and check it out. Thanks for your thoughts.
Artme: Sheoak, River Oak, Forest Oak, Hairy Oak.
Many thanks Arthur. Confident it is not Hairy Oak but will have a
    look at the others.
    Barkers Egg: Silky Oak.
Thanks for responding Lee, as mentioned above, it is similar
but not quite the usual grain I have experienced with Silky Oak.

Many thanks for taking the time to respond and offer your suggestions.
