Local PITH Pen - Slimline Challenge
This is a pen I made for our local pen turners club. It was a slimline challenge. This was my 1st hidden clip of any kind, and I followed a tutorial from IAP. It actually was easier than I thought, so I think I'll be doing some more of these. Maybe even 1 for me. The blank was one of my experiments that I thought turned out pretty good. The finial & center band are black alumilite. I drilled too deep into the cap, so I think the upper barrel is too long. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it.

Nice job. It's amazing what can be done with the slimline parts with a bit of imagination.

Certainly wouldn't know it started as a slimline. Well done with the pen and the blank.

Thanks guys.
The 1st 3 pens I ever made were slimlines. Then I went on to bigger & "better" kits. Then after a few years, I decided to do some pens for the troops. And on about half of them I did a custom centerband. Now I never use the centerband, and at times I don't use the custom finial cap. Now the slimline & the Jr Gent are my favorite kits just because there is so much you can do to make a truly unique pen.

The pen looks very interesting. Can you point me where I can find the instructions on how to make the pen? I have made about 30 slimlines and a few Sierra pens but would like to try what you have done.

Bob, Striking pen mate full of character and quality workmanship indeed a great pen to present to someone or indeed a fine keeper IMHO.

An interesting variation on the slimline. Not sure how you did this so something for me think about.

I am amazed at how clean your cut for the clip has turned out, what did you use to cut the slot? PS it goes without saying but I am saying it, great pen, excellent workmanship. Amos

Thanks Amos for the kind words. To make the slot, I started with a dremel tool and a cutoff wheel. Then I used a small saw blade that works with an X-acto knife. Then a small flat file. The slowest part was making sure only to cut enough for the clip to slip through the slot. I'm going to make a jig so glueing up the segments will be a bit easier. The only other part that took extra time was hand finishing the top. But that wasn't all that hard, just time consuming. Well, compared to finishing on the lathe it was time consuming.
I'm not too sure I get credit for the imagination part. I just borrowed ideas from other slimline modifications. But the patience was all mine.
This pen is probably 10mm longer than a regular slimline, and bigger in diameter too. I wished I'd made a side by side photo. Most people I showed it to didn't immediately know it was a slimline kit because of the size of the finished pen. Not a big pen, but visibly larger than a slimline.
