Like it both ways...resting on the pebble lets the bottom edge get light, and offers a sharp defined shape.
I would think it would all depend on the "theme" of the photo...to just show off the pen, laying flat at a slight angle...to show off the workmanship and details in the hardware, resting on the pebble."That's why I love my computer,,,,,,,, my friends live in it."
