M3 Turning
Thought I would share my experience with the M3 blanks, this is my second attempt, the first one went bang.
1.Prepared the blanks, then drilled, making sure i cooled bit as I drilled. then used belt sander to help me get it rounded a bit. photo 1
2. I used this spindle gouge, turned it side wards about 60 degrees and turned, photos 2 and 3
3. At about this point, I turn the blanks on the mandrel about 90 degrees(to ensure even turning), and change over to the skew. photo 4,
4. I hold the skew like this and draw it towards me, find I can better control for a fine cut . photo 5 and 6
5. Usually it is fairly smooth after the skew, start sanding, depending on how much you think it needs, started with 180, being CAREFUL re heat build up, photos 7 and 8
6. Time to wet sand, started at 800, then 1200, then used the acrylic pads to 15000. and wipe off the muck with a wet paper towel.
photo 9, 10, 11,
7. Time to polish, used what was provided, IT IS MAGIC!, Nushine11, put "C" on with the finger, start up and use paper towel to polish, move to clean sections of towel as it becomes black. repeat, then clean off, then use "S" the same way, result is breathtakingly beautiful.

The pen is an Emperor, I only have one in stock, a Limited Edition, so I want to turn the other two colours I have before deciding which one I will use?! But there it is. Questions, ideas and advice gladly accepted, AmosLast edited by DJ’s Timber; 21st March 2008 at 07:41 PM. Reason: Merge 2 posts

Great tutorial Amos, thanks.
I think it will be a while before I attempt expensive blanks like that
Can't wait to see the finished pen.

It came out beautifully, Amos. What exactly is M3?
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

http://www.metalpenblanks.com/ follow that link Al, it will tell all. And you thought the Gemstone blanks were heavy! Amos
Stirlo, if it has it is because of poor sharpening technique, tried my best, will have to give it another shot, AmosLast edited by PenTurner; 21st March 2008 at 11:38 PM. Reason: addition

Nice work Amos definately high end material. Did you go for the Gold or Blk Ti limited edition Emperor? Just out of interest what number is yours? amos the curved skew has been around a while now, I have been using that profile for over 10 years. I think it is called a Lacer Skew chisel if you buy them from a turning supply out let

Congratulations Amos it has turned out a treat. Be interesting to see which one you put to the kit.
Did you get the polish from Mike and if so what was the cost?
