Default Mackay Cedar Custom Fountain Pen

My pen output has slowed considerably, hopefully the speed will pick up once I get all the mandrels and jigs made for this type of work.
At the moment, I am making them as I need them.

This one is made from Mackay Cedar, and some Acrylic Acetate, fitted with an extra fine #6 Jowo nib.
The Mackay Cedar was given one coat of thin CA and some Ubeaut Traditional wax, nice to hold.
The pen is 155mm long capped, the pen barrel is 15mm diameter.
It has a homemade stainless steel clip.

    Beautifully made and finished Brad.
Personally, this is not my favourite wood but you have brought out its best and finished it beautifully.
Mackay Cedar is also called Red Siris, and has an irritating wood dust from memory.

Not my favourite timber either, I have a number of them growing on my property, but have never cut one up yet. The dust is certainly irritating if you don’t take measures to prevent it getting up your nose.
As this is pretty much a prototype, and I wasn’t sure if it would make it to a finished pen, I just used a B-grade blank. Now that it’s finished, I don’t mind the look of it, but will probably choose a more pleasing timber for the next one.

I really like the flat closed end in this one. Most closed end pens I see have a rounded end but this one fits the bill perfectly. I also love how it just looks like a stick if timber with the cap on - really well conceived

Cheers Gab. My tastes are more straight lines, as long as it looks sleek. Some seem to prefer the round end torpedo shape, each to their own I guess.

Once again Brad you restore my addiction with a tremendous respect for this pen. Many pics total devotion to the fine detail of excellence. Design is crucial to me,you have excelled. Of course we all have differing tastes in timber but choosing as you have in this one it stimulates us not to ignore any of them because of problems but to proceed as you have with respect to the species. Most of us will spend many years striving for the quality and dead set sharpness in your pics. Made my Day mate, many thanks for sharing.

    Kind regards Peter.

Thanks for your kind words Peter
I am glad we all have differing tastes, it would be a boring world otherwise.

It is a good looking pen Brad.

Around here where trees are few and far between, woodturners scramble over top of each other to get to wood like that since all of the natural trees here have white wood. You gents are spoiled.

Cheers Pete. Sounds like you need to come to Australia for a holiday, make sure you bring an empty suitcase . Maybe bring a few empty ones, we have plenty of nice timber.
When that little parcel of blanks finally makes its way to you, you’ll get a taste of what we have on offer over here.

If I had the bucks I'd buy a container full to ship back rather than a suitcase. In the meantime I'll keep buying a few lottery tickets.

    Thanks Neil.
I am finding the process satisfying, some frustrating moments as well though. I don’t think it’s for everyone, but it’s worth having a go if you are inclined.
