    Default Makay Cedar Sierra

    Hi all

Finally got some time to have a second attempt at some of the blanks kindly donated by Mkypenturner (aka Troy) after my first attempt came apart on me. Much better this time and I must say this stuff is an absolute delight to turn.

So here it is dressed in a chrome executive sierra from timberbits. Sanded to 600 and then lacquer dipped to 5 coats. This is the first time I've tried lacquer dipping and I'm pretty impressed, a big thanks goes to edblysard for his information on how to do this. My technique needs refinement but I will definitely be using this technique some more.

Once again a big thanks to Troy for his stunning generosity in giving away all these wonderful blanks.

    cheers

    Hey Troy

It's such beautiful timber we can't help but want to show it off.

    nice looking pen

I'm interested in how the lacquer holds up. I've had nothing but trouble
What sort of lacquer are you using (ie brand name etc)

It's an automotive Acrylic Lacquer from 3M diluted 50/50 with general purpose thinners. Not sure how this one is going to last as the coat feels a bit soft to me, but as it's designed for cars it should hold up ok. I think that I was a bit impatient and didn't let each coat dry and harden sufficiently before dipping again. This would mean that there is solvent still trapped in the lacquer film which would make it feel soft. Hopefully as time goes on and the lacquer dries out it will harden up.

It's a couple of days down the track and the lacquer has definitely hardened up compared to day 1. Now I just have to see how it holds up to wear and tear.

Just an update for SM on how the lacquer is holding up. This pen has been in constant use since I finished it 4 weeks ago. It sits in my pants pocket every day along with various odds and ends including a metal bodied folding knife. So far so good. It still looks as good as it did when I finished it.

    cheers
