    Default Mandrel for 10mm tubes?

    Just a quicky (I love quickies )

Just got a few of the 10mm pens (Fountain + Rollerball) to have a play with.

Do you actually get a thicker mandrell for the 10mm tubes to slip onto? Or do you lot turn your own from the 7mm and slide em up inside:eek: the 10mm, then get em on the mandrel??

    Thanks heaps

you are hoping but yea you use normal mandrel with something in the  so it might not give you the quickie ,you are looking for but the pen tube will get one.

Now seriously depending on which kit you want to do. You can buy bushes and they do slide in the tube and turn it like the 7mm pens.

    MY BAD !!!!

Looks like I jumped the gun

After reading Toni's post, I had a closer look at my bag of tricks.

I did actually get the bushes but didnt look close enough to see that they do slip in:eek: to the larger tubes, then go on the 7mm mandrel!

So yeah, thanks ... I getz it now I got all I need [rubbing hands together]

You can slip a 7mm tube inside the 10mm tube and get away with using a 7mm mill. It ain't perfect (you need a steady hand and a good eye) but it works for me.

Rich I have an original 10mm mandrel from Carb-a-tec, it came with 5 bushes and you just slide the tubes on. Guess that more money would be made from bushes and 7 mm mandrels. With the 10mm mandrel I would have Popeye muscles to flex it. That is why Berea has the B mandrel for som of the larger pens to stop the flexing that you get with the A mandrel.

That would have been good ... however they dont seem to stock it any more, and if they do, the idiots dont advertise it online or in their catalogue. Sorry, but I got a sore point with them. Ive just recieved the only part Ive ever ordered from them, and Ive waited over two months for it.!

Twas a simple twin duct connecter for my extractor, and they had one on the floor, but would they sell that to me and order themselves one? . . Oh no .. gotta order that from friggin Neptune and have it shipped via interstella slug shipment! . .

Ok .. dummy spit over ..

    Thanks all

Must be the weather with carbatech. My FIL bought a bandsaw from them they sent the order out with all the stuff. He was so excited arrived no saw. When he rang them they told him on back order. HE was ropable. HE said how hard is it to say that wehn you order something. So he is having a dummy spit like you.

Bugger CT, ask Jim! He carries the 10mm mandrel as part # PM-2 @ $21 and, although I don't think he stocks a 10mm mill, he does carry a "Universal mill" (handles 4 different sizes of tubes) for... wait for it... $61  So he may as well get the rest of your wallet, too!

Or you can order a 10mm mandrel with the next lot of penkits from Froggie40, he has 'em listed in his cattledog as BMP21B @ $18.95 Still no 10mm mills, though...

I purchased one of Jims deluxe mills and I am so glad I did it has made it somewhat easier to mill the larger pens especially the Sierra pens it is a must for the Sierras.

Darren I am curious as to why all thelarger berea pens are not done on the larger 8mm shaft.
With the claim from them that it is more rigid and give more support, yet the majority of the pens are done on the standard 1/4" mandrel.

Jim, the Churchill and El Grande are done on the B mandrel, also the American flat top pen, that is what is on Berea's site. Why they do the flat top on the B mandrel I don't know because the A mandrel for the ones I get are sufficient for the ones I get from GPW. They say that it is to prevent flex that you can get from the A/7mm mandrel. I have seen some people exert a lot of pressure on a mandrel when turning and I am sure you have seen the results of over tightening, one, the locking nut and two, the tail stock of the lathe. For the price of kits like the Sierras, Cigars and Barons, these 3 I would turn more than the Chuchill or El Grande, you would think that they would make them on a heavier mandrel. Even when you look at the CSUSA range, your JR series, Emperor, Gentleman, Statesman, Imperial and Lotus pens, some of these kit start at $45 each for the cheaper platings but they all use the 7mm mandrel. The only thing you could do is make your own bushes or buy the commercial bushes and drill them to suit the B mandrel.
