Mango Polaris
Hi all. I have been having a few pen disasters of late on the rare oppotunity to hut the shed arises. However today was a good day. This is a Polaris made from Mango wood. The wood is from a tree in my in-laws garden. The branch had been lying around on the ground for about a year so had dried out well. It is the first time I had made my own blank which was fun. It was cut by hand mainly as my bandsaw was not big enough for the job. The pen was turned and sanded then 10 layers of CA before micromesh and Brasso finish. It is fitted to a gold polaris from timberbits. I love the colour and lines in it. It was meant to be a gift but think I may hang on to it for a while

G'day Sturina,
I sure as hell can't see anything wrong with that one. I love the swirl of the grain in the wood
But would you mind telling about the disasters so hopefully I can learn from someone else's mistakes instead of my own all the time

Hi Adynaton. I still have lots of mistakes to learn from. I had a couple of acrylics go crack. The first was to much heat, the second and third (hang head in shame) was tool at wrong angle with too big a gap between blank and rest and just got it jammed cracking the blank. Then I got distracted sanding the edges of a wooden blank and sanded too much wood of leaving insufficient to turn and get a good fit. Had a tube let go in the blank and some pine just not wanting to turn. I tried something a little fancy but the wood just chipped too deep to fix (sharpen that chisel i here you say, I did). Luckily this was not all on the same day!
In summary though all these are mistakes that get made and could be avoided if I listened to others and decided not to try and re-invent the wheel when I turn. Lots of fun though whether the break or not.

That's a nice piece of wood. Seems very orange though. Is there a colour cast to the images? Is that how it looks IRL?
Regardless of the colour though. I love the grain pattern. Mango is a dice wood regardless of which way it's cut. My pen I've using now is my first Sierra made from a tree in my parents home, and 2-odd years later, it's still looking great.
Nice job.

Hey Sturina,
Very Nice pen, I have a lump of Mango here somewhere, I'll have to find it and do something with it. Just got to remember where it is

Last time I tried to turn a Mango, it flew off the mandrel and splattered all over the joint . Great pen mate !
