Wow Gavin,
That's a great reply. Where were you when I was working the markets?
I think the guys here have covered it off pretty well. One thing I've found and am still trying to beat into my own head is, do it for love, not money. Life's to short to do things you hate, and if you love what you're doing, any money you make from it simply becomes a bonus.

Hey Ian,
There are some real words of wisdom there, and I wish you all the best at the 'Mandjar' Markets, I have chosen not to bother with the Markets Scene, as I don't do 'people' too well, (specially the ones who see $40.00 on a pen and tell you that Office Works sells them cheaper)
As someone said earlier on, in the thread you should have a few trinkets and smaller items, as a bloke who has been dragged to a few markets, and things, If the lady folk have a chat with a stall holder they feel as though they have to buy something so a few Key Rings, little bowls and things, a couple of spinning tops, (good to give to a kid or two, to butter up the Parents)
Once again Good Luck

The pens look great, Hang in there, we did markets for a while. Ppl want to know your not just a fly by night.
We also found that the most common quote was "Oh I didn't know you would be here..what a fantastic gift idea.." So it does take a few markets to get yourself up and running...
One thing I did find is Ppl want change from a $50 especially in our area (Newcastle region) Sydney and larger places might be different, so we offered a few extra bits letter openers boxes and the like... All of this takes time and money.. So hang in there and go slowly with one or two items of each..
If you do decide a web site is an option we offer FREE links to Blogs and sites for our customers so just another option to consider (check it out HERE )

Hi Ian, slight thread drift but I know the wish list. I went into Carrolls yesterday as I was in the area and bought a few things but doubled the wish list size in the process. Lucky the wife and kids were in the car outside so there was a time limit and therefor my credit card wasn't as damaged as it could have been. I know there will be retribution though as she has a list of three fabric shops today. Do they make a small lathe you plug into the cigarette lighter in the car while you wait?

G'day Ian
don't want to hijack your thread, but please keep asking the questions you are asking, because I am getting so much information from it myself. Like you, I did a market and sold nothing.
Gavin, thanks so much for the advice, I know it was sent to Ian but I will happily "pinch" it and make use of it.
The only advice I can pass on is something I have to do myself, and that is have business cards for people to take, so even if they don't purchase today they can have a card to keep [ maybe]

Nai you can make pretty decent cards for yourself with MS publisher that way you can make small runs and make changes as necessary, you can buy card stock ,or what we do is print on photo paper and Laminate ,keep it in the family as much as possible lol.
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

I have mainly sold mine at the local PO or pub. ( I live in a sort of country town). But I did read in a pen making book that if a person complains about the price just answer "Well it appears that pen is not for you then". It is for sure I could not do what you are doing, but you are having a go and good luck to you. I hope your sales increase.

I will put my bit in I sell my pens at Moama Market this market is a general market about a 150 stall holders
$15.00 each or 2 for $20.oo and sets of cigar pen and pencil in a wooden box for 50.00
I am getting very blunt here PLEASE DON'T take it personally I would not stop at your stall it has no draw card in less I was looking for a pen even if you had a stand with balloons for sale for the kids it would help or some draw card
sorry if it sound a bit harsh but I say what I think and it gets me in trouble all the time but it is better to honest and not beet around the bush
