A few from the Melany Show timbers
After picking up a Burdekin Plum branch and a mystery root from the Maleny show (see here) I couldn’t resist cutting some blanks out of each for some pens to see what the grain was like last weekend. I just finished them today.
The Burdekin Plum was amazing, with browns reds and blacks, but I thought cross-cutting them was going to be even better. Although it was a pain to turn, and I destroyed 3 half blanks in the process, the Rhodium Jr Gent 3 and Sierra click turned out great with amazing Chatoyance. Mind you, the other Sierra click is in normal cut, and also looks pretty good.
I could see the mystery root had amazing colours when I cut the blanks, but the birds-eye grain wasn’t evident until I finished turning them. The colours are amazing, reds, browns, sort of purples and blacks. It does not turn like a eucalypt, more like Budgeroo, so perhaps it is (as someone at the show suggested).
They are all finished CA and look great to me, wish I could have bought more of the timbers, but i still have quite a bit left of each.

Now,are the pen blanks cut up ready for a visit in the night some time lol. Too good for your private collection ,they need to be displayed properly hehe, (like my market stall) I hope the person you beat down to get that burdikan plum doesn't see these ,they will never part with another bit I do prefer the darker timbers most times and these match up beautifully with the kits you chose ,thanks for sharing cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

I am 99% sure your mystery root is Budgeroo. It is a beautiful timber, though you will be kept busy sharpening your tools. I have just done a set for the Bowls Club in the wood, and I will post it this afternoon so you can have a good look.
Great work.
