    Default Messing around

Ever wondered what to do with those little cut-off
pieces from the ends of pen blanks. I used to throw
them in the bin but recently kept a few.

A bit of P.V.A. glue, stick them together carefully,
drill and glue the barrels in. Get out your sharpened
skew and see what results you can achieve.

With a little more care next time I will ensure the
pieces are a more uniform size and squared up better.
For a practise go I was reasonably happy with it.

The other pen in the pic is Box Elder, just love that
    wood.

Allan the lower half adds character I think being on a slight angle to the top looks good as does the Box Elder

I like the Box Elder. Personally I think the offcuts need to be skewed to give a different character.

Christos: I agree with you and will be endeavouring to
achieve that the next time I try.

Wheelinround: It was unintentional Ray but trying to hold
all the pieces together with P.V.A. in one go was
a mistake. Next time I will try to get better
matching pieces to start with, e.g. outer sizes
fairly similar. Next time I will stick them up in stages.

Nai84: Give it a try - I am sure there is an interest in
having pens of that design. I cannot condone
making any out of acrylic (lol) ... at our club
I steadfastly refuse to handle acrylic pens as
we are a "woodturning" club. This usually causes
some laughter as I ham it up a bit if I am conducting
    "Show and Tell".

Thanks to you all for your comments.

Nice work Allan. I have made a few of the laminated pens out of leftovers. They are an absolute bugger to get square and exactly the right size on my equipment. A checker board patterns looks good too. The rest of my left overs are going into WW casts.

Had almost a five gallon bucket of them little pieces. Hated the thought of just throwing them out. Finally got tired of looking at them and gave them all to the fella down the street. He did something along the lines of what you did here with them, just in bigger chunks(guess I have bigger blanks and more leftover after chopping them up?).

Maybe a more uniform pattern(repeating pattern) of equal sizes and perfectly squared.....or perhaps some kind of metal in between the segments?

Liking that BoxElder though! Well done!!
