morse adaptor
Hi all, my first post. I want to get into pen making and I have a problem in that my lathe drive is bored to only 6mm dia. and consequently wont take an available morse tapered mandrel. The drive thread is M18 x 2.5RH and I want to find out if there is somewhere I could source an adaptor to overcome the problem? I could get one machined but it would be easier to procure one off the shelf if available. Any suggestions??

Mick you may be in the same boat as this post. Is it also a GMC lathe you have got as the thread sounds the same.

morse taper
Thanks Dallas, yeh my lathe is an ELU and apparently the M18x2.5RH is a bit of a bodgey thread, which makes it hard to find pieces to fit that turning. I've sent a note off to Hare and Forbes hoping they might assist.

I have an old Dynalink lathe which I started out with ,it has a weird thread something like 18.7 mm dia. I made an adapter to suit from brass with a morse taper to take pen mandrels, I also have another similar lathe branded "forbes" Just for spares ,never used it.But the thread on that one seems to be 17.5 mm dia. I do however in my collection of taps and dies have an 18 mm X 2.5 pitch tap and die .Some things come in handy if you never use them lol. Having a metal lathe does help for the odd job or two Contact me if you get stuck and we might work something out Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

You are in the land of oportunity if the trade traing facility for Apprentices still is running in Wagga for the armed services certainly there will be a workshop or many where yo may be able to get an adaptor made to fit a commercial Collet holder.
Seriously with the low prices of small conventional lathes available and in the long run absolute ease of use seriously weigh up purchasing one where all accessories are cheap as chips and include chucks etc in this catagory. You must have aquired this lathe for some reason initially and suggest it probably fits the purpose.
Also you are doubly blessed in that Wagga has a beaut Wood group with some of the finest turners around as helpful and kind guys. The Wagga Turnabout has been running there for many years at the Recreation Centre just out of town a live in three days of bliss in around April from memory. At this time a large basketball stadium is filled with lathes and people guided by professionals, sales areas, every bit of kindness, food is catered by Chefs, everyone wants to show there working ability and allow the use of their gear. Make haste slowly or accellerate call Larry Sloan who will guide you as a competent person and devotee of the Turnabout and Wood Group for so many years.
You also live in the heart of wonderful timber country trust me I know this having had wonderful times in Wagga and attending the turnabouts. There is nothing in this world better than associating with like minded people with common interests both on the ground and active forum participation in that order.
Have success if not pm me.
Regards Peter.
