Myrtle you're a Tiger
Another from the pen blank swap, Tiger Myrtle in slimline All Cross Gold. This wood is wonderful to turn, sometimes it just peeled off in fine strips like orange peeling. Also I took note of the thread that Neil just posted about the questionable idea that putting CA onto Shellawax may come unstuck in the future, So!, I sanded with 120 grit and sealed the wood with shellawax, then I sanded to 400, and applied CA, as a sealer, then sanded right through to 2000, and used CA 5 times, the CA finish was rough by my reckoning so I wet sanded back a little to smooth out, now had lines on it, so I used a small amount of EEE as an abrasive to smooth off the the CA; was still not satisfied and frustrated that I could not get the CA on like I have seen, then an Idea hit me , how about using thin CA, the one in the red bottle instead of the one in the orange bottle!, BINGO!!! we have arrived with a beautiful CA finish at last. did that 2 times, then I treated the blank as if it were "plastic" and polished one time lightly with PolyGlaze Diamond finish. Your comments welcome and i will try to use good advice on the next pen(let me at it!) Amos

Sorry Amos, didn't mean to scare you, your previous post just reminded me to ask the question.
Nice pen by the way, perhaps natural light would show the colours better. I bought a fair bit of TM at the last WWW show and I can't wait to see how it turns out.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Amos you have got the tiger by the tail now Another beautiful pen and it is good to see you are nailing the CA finish as well. I am glad you are getting some shop time and enjoying the timber.

G'day Amos,
That pen is stunning, as is your job on the finish. You can guess what I will be working on this weekend.
Cheers,

Amos
That is a much clearer pic of the Tiger and it is great.
Have you tried turning that yellow stuff alongside the pen, looks interesting?

I love Tiger Myrtle, but it always seems to lose something when whittled down to pen sizes. The only TM pens I've really been happy with (in regard to retaining the character of the wood) have all been turned at 45° cross-grain or thereabouts.
Oh... and Peter? I think he'd need a metal lathe to turn the pliers....

Thanks Peter, and Skew, I will try to keep that in mind if I get a peice big enough to 45 degrees cross cut. I might try a piece of 5000 yr old huon pine in Yellow paint!!!! Amos

Amos,
The natrual light really sets that off. Stunning.
Peter,
We must be of a kindred spirit. I thought I was the only one who wonders what anything would look like turned as a pen lol.
Cheers,
Rick
