    Default A Mystery Gentleman

    Hi fellers. Just finished this Timberbits Gentleman in Gold Titanium. The stick of timber I picked up at the Brisbane wood show. Blowed if I have any idea just what the wood is . Turned and finished nicely, although I must admit, I turned off the bushes without using calipers, and managed to under-turn the cap end a couple of thou . After I had assembled the pen I noticed that the cap end bushes had a film of CA on them from a previous Gent pen. Bugger !!. Anyway, what is the consensus on timber type ?.     Lovely bit of work. It makes agreat looking pen

    It does look like a piece of maple. I will let you know in a week or so when I turn a piece of the Qld Maple I got from Mapleman and I can see if the grain and colours are similar. Its certainly not Canadian Rock Maple.

    My guess is also Qld Maple, looks pretty much like the stuff I have.

    Thanks for the kind comments guys, I forgt to mention, I sanded to 600, cleaned the blank with metho, then applied a copiouse amount BLO to the wood with finger and basically burnished the BLO into the grain of the wood. Then the usual 20 coats of thin CA. Etc. I really feel that I am getting a cleaner, brighter finish with much more chatoyance displayed within the wood doing those 2 extra steps.

    Maple, quilted or tiger strip maple, lovely stuff, just got a bunch of turning blocks and 4/4 cuts in at work, one piece has birds eyes on one side and quilting like that on the other.

    Hey Ed, I think you and the other guys who said Maple would be spot on. I have just finished a fancy medicine cabinet that has Queensland Maple door frames & frieze, and the coloring in that timber is very similar.

    Hehe, the mods having a day off ?

    Re-the BLO application. It's extremely technical. Unscrew cap, insert 1 finger into bottle, remove finger covered in BLO, and wipe all over blank & bushes, put plenty on ! & rub it in. Let soak for a minute, then turn lathe on and rub off with dunny paper till no more comes off. Then do your CA finish. Besides popping the grain it hepls the bushes to release from the blank when finished. Sweet !!
