Naughty and Slim
Ok, made ya look....it should read knotty and slim.
Made from Mallee and Red Gum, both provided by Lovejohnnydees, aka Kim there in Oz....
The pen is resting on a piece of the Mallee it is cut from...the Red Gum used in the knots and center band is from barn post, Kim said they were 80 years old.
Finished in lacquer dip, dress in black Ti.

Houston we have lift off.
All systems functioning the sky is the limit.
I admit to a bias using Aussie Burl but I have a ship load of others I am trying to use as well, they (all) timbers have excitement unlimited.
Pleased you are exploring the great Slimline , your comment is funny and the neatest knot one can tie. have been musing on our forthcoming 54 yrs since tying the knot with my dearly beloved.
I also have read multi numbers of explanations as to how but they all come down to just real hard work and very small pieces, send me a pm with your details and I will send you some beaut small sticks for you to play with, some Aussie some knot.
Top pen and delightfully presented, love that centre band.
Regards Peter.

I like the knot a lot, what did you use for the black?
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Those knots are awesome! One day I will be brave enough to try one when nobody is looking!
The centreband finishes it though - its timber and shape. What is the thin black line on it though? What did you use to mark it?
I like.
Nathan.

I suspect the centre band is also a laminate with the centre being black plastic ,If I was skilful enough to try those things thats what I would do at least. It certainly raises the bar on the "humble" slimline style . Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

The black is Evergreen sheet stryene.
(plastic)
Sheet stock is avaiable here...
http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/Sheets.htm
I use part number 9511...it is .010" thick, or 0.25mm thick.
Cost for 3 sheets 12" X 6" or 300mm X 150mm was $3.99 American at my local hobby shop.
Unlike wood veneer, it is uniform in thickness, and CA will hold it to just about any material.
It is cheaper than pick guard material, comes in thinner and thicker sizes.
I do not know if Evergreen will ship to OZ, so I suggest you check your local model hobby shop...it is very popular with model train folks, and RC air plane people.
Yes, the center band is red gum laminated to the stryene, and like the kit center band, it floats free on the transmission.

Far out
When I first looked at this pen I thought the black bit had been burned in, silly me
Sorry
I thought I had made a prior comment in this thread
It seems I hadn't. I think I'm losing it.
So once again a v v nice pen. I like the centre piece, adds immeasurably to the classy look of the pen
Instead of drill bits can you send some of that sheeting
but first I'll check around old sydney townregards

Nice work again Ed. The kids got a real buzz from seeing what you have created from an old stump/root. You must nearly need some more of those blanks. I love seeing what you do with them. It gives me great satisfaction seeing your finished product. Almost better than when I complete one of my own pens.
