Nautical themed pens
Hey guys, i was wondering if you would be able to give me any advise on nautical themed pens. I have a lady who would like these pens to relate to the nautical environment as much as possible as she has a house boat which she is converting into a gift shop and she wishes to sell my pens.
I have located a clip (Propeller Custom Clip) which is about as nautical as i could find. Have you guys seen a different style of clip that still relates to the nautical environment?
I have tried to search for woods that were used in boat making. The woods that i came up with were, Huon pine, Lignum Vitae, Mahogany and English Oak. Are there any other types of woods that were used?
Thanks in advanced for you help guys, Mitch

Teak is probably a good option, and a very nice wood.

One of the all time successful boat oriented mysteries is perpetuated by the use of Burled Huon Pine. It weaves its own magic, keep the shavings, put it in small Muslim bags that you can make or buy for Pot Pourri, give a small bag of the shavings with the pen, use a brief description of the growth, rarity, real value and scarcity of the product. cast a spell on the finished pen by respecting the timber and passing that on. For extra sales promote the deck timber but get Teak Burl (make your eyes water). Stress the role Lignum Vitae played in housing propeller shafts in ships because of its unique characteristics I have made pens from old ships bearings, There is up north and west in abundance Mahogany seek out character in this timber, stress the opulence of fit outs in boats using it.Heart of Oak are our ships dressed in a chosen pen kit with the propeller clip and the owner of the houseboat will both love you forever and if you provide up market pens for decent reward the partnership will flourish.
Be careful of on consignment, absolute records of how many you provide etc. So many times I read of horror stories in regard to dealers wearing out the for sale pens, people stealing consignment articles. The refit costs and everyday running of the boat business should ideally cover the buying of your pens.
Have success, kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Hi Mitch
Not sure where you can get old boat timber from. Do you have any boat yards near you?
Another thought I had was if you could cast a coil of rope in resign then drill it out for your tube, Theory being the resign will hold the rope together for you. Of course it would have to be small (thin)rope but it might work and would look some what nautical. If you could find a small rope that looks good you might be able to glue it to the brass and then stabilize with ca so you get the texture of the rope.
Or you could get sea shells and glue them onto a tube and then cast.
Last thought is using parts from a compass like the the watch pens.
If I think of any more I will post them.
Just had a thought you could use thick rope and cast it length way and drill straight down the middle.
Good luckCheers Rum Pig

The only boat yard that comes i know of near me would be Port Kembla, but its more of a shipping/industrial yard from memory.
I like the sound of the rope in resin! Is there any guides on here about how to do it? Or do you simply cover it in CA? Thanks for your quality ideas Rum Pig

I have not heard of them being done before so it may be trial and error.
If it was me i would try thin CA in little bits until it was solid. If you try to put to much on in one hit you may end up with the CA turning white.
The other way I would try is dipping it into something like WOP.
Buy some tubes and have fun.
I will see if I can find some timber up here for you, maybe off the prawn trawlers.Cheers Rum Pig

You could try as suggested, or as an alternative wrap some white cord around the tube and cast it, or even use a label with anything you like printed on it.

Treasure chests, skull and cross bone flags too!
A lot of naval themed pictures could be laser engraved into pen barrels. Anchors, oars, rope knots, sextants, lighthouses, and, and, you get the idea.

Cast blanks with rope.
Signal flags with appropriate messages such as Nelson's famous "England expects every man to do his duty". Might be a tad long but you get the idea.
Laser engraved famous ship's crests.
Naval rank insignias. Modern navy officer ranks are particularly easy as they are worn around coat sleeves.
Lyrics or music of famous/classic naval music. e.g. Hearts of Oak, Anchors Aweigh. Again, these could be laser engraved.
