    Default Newbie error

Well, the wife reckons I shouldnt admit to things like this, makes me look like a boob. But hey

Was gluing in the brass tube into one of the pens and had a slight angle to the tube this time, I felt a warm sensation over my fingers, finished pushing the tube into the piece of wood, on ly to realise I had glued 3 fingers together with superglue. Man that stuff sticks well.

In the end, my wife was pulling on each side of my fingers to try and seperate and I was using a razor blade between them to seperate the glue, they were not going to budge. Quite funny in hindsight but at the time, I thought for a little while there it would require a visit to the doctors to get them apart

You trusted SWMBO with a razor blade. (needed pics for that) It's akin to giving SWMBO an angle grinder to file down you nails . I'd be off to the doc straight away and not tell anyone. Thanks for sharing.

I wouldn't be too concerned about admitting that. I doubt many of us have not had similar issues with superglue.

I've started using rubber gloves when gluing tubes now. Just the cheap disposable ones from the local supermarket, they come in boxes of 24.

I got sick of spending the evenings cleaning superglue off my fingers with sandpaper

Next time it happens, tell her to use her Nail Polish Remover or Acetone instead of a razor

Never done it myself... but if I had then I would probably try using Acetone to break down the glue or soak the affected areas in hot water for a while to soften the skin which should make separation possible
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Yep, my Acetone purchase wasn't just for the pens

Actually over the weekend I had a slight incident. Normally wear gloves when doing CA finish, applying the glue to the blank while holding folded up toilet pasper to spread it out. Was in a rush to get a coat on before going elsewhere, so just slapped it on, wiped with the paper, and when I took my hand away, the glue had soaked right throught the paper, and was glued to my finger underneath. Even with soaking in acetone, I had t4rouble getting the last of the paper off and had to scrape a bit.

I've given up trying to wipe it off with Acetone. I just let it build up thickness over the day, then soak my fingers in hot water under the shower, leave it for an hour or so then just peel it off. It comes off like a thick layer of skin.

PS cheap rubber gloves can melt with the CA and make even more mess over you and your work.

Hey Neil, is that "comes off like a thick layer of skin" or "comes of WITH a thick layer of skin"?

forgive me but this is a not particularly smart method

Superglue has bugger all strength in shear — i.e. side to side movement

to unglue superglued fingers all you needed to do is "wiggle" your fingers against each other, the grip will let go completely after a few minutes with no skin loss

worked a treat when my then 3½ yo son glued a few fingers together helping to assemble or repair a toy
