Olive Wood and Another
Ok 2 of my latest attempts. One is Olivewood Power Pen kit. 2nd is a NightFire laminated blank, slimline pearl satin.
I think I'm starting to get the hang of finishing. The Olivewood came out MUCH better than my previous ones. Still need to get into the finer sanding a bit but a lot of progress.
The nightfire I didn't sand nearly as much as I should have but still came out nice.
Both done with WOP finish, polished with Plastic X compound
Comments/criticism always appreciated.

Two fabulous pens there. The shaping is very impressive. What tools are you using for these, the smaller size or full size?? Beautiful blanks as well

The olivewood pen was done freehand with a 3/4 gouge (the one that comes with the lathe from Penn State hehe)
The Nightfire blank was done with a duplicator and template. (Shush Toasty) My daughter like the profile and wanted one to use at school. I would have a hard time getting it to come out good freehand.

Ahh don't worry, I would never give someone a hard time for using aids to assist them in getting a desirable result (says the guy who still uses a jig for chisel sharpening )
Your finishes are definitly coming along though, looking pretty good!
Your photography is also improving dramatically as well, nice one. Have a look at this blog entry to see if you can find any extra tips for taking photos of your pens.Toasty

Well done your work is coming along just fine. two nice blanks and some good freehand work with the gouge. Nothing wrong with duplication just keep quite about it

Definitely gonna look into how I take my pictures more. The pic above does not do the olivewood pen justice.

Ok I don't have any pics at the moment but the light bulb has lit. The finish on my latest 2 came out almost flawless.
I followed the WOP tutorial pretty strictly (added an extra coat of wop at end)
I still have some minute pores that didn't get completely filled (or I didn't sand finish enough). But.. They are small enough that it means I hit the mark.
I just need to be a tiny bit more anal retentive as I'm sanding and that's it I think.

Very nice work. I'm not a big fan of coves and beads in pens, but the shape of the Olivewood pen is very appealing.
