olivewood blanks for charity
Hi all.
Thanks to djstimber I have discovered that supremewood sell "super exotic" olivewood pen blanks at $50 for 14 size 120x13x13.
As I have a good stash of it and would like to see it put to good use, (and learn to use the new bandsaw ) this gave me the idea of giving away 50 packs like that to anybody in Australia who sends a $50 donation to the Red Cross. I'll pay for the postage. You even get a tax deduction!
If you are interested, post to reserve yours, then send me a PM with the address and a scan of your receipt (not that I do not trust you, just so you do not forget afterwards ).
Cheers
Frank

How "super exotic" is super exotic? What type of Olive Wood?
Not that I have any pennies spare, but I like to know what I'm missing out on... I feel more justified in my gripes to The Treasurer that way.

Skew, it is the same type "sourced in Italy and Spain" (originally ) that they sell. As figure goes, it is the same (literally, same log ) as the horribly photographed bowls I just made. If you go back to my old posts, you will see that I have raved and ranted about my stash almost everywhere... .
Incidentally, you said in another post that you were happy to pay up to $5 a blank for special ones... does your Treasurer have a problem with the RC?
Djstimber, if you too are well laden, it makes me wonder a bit about the "super exotic" tag also. Where did you source yours?
Cheers

Mine is a branch of a single tree from the farm where the original homestead was. As far as I know it was demolished sometime around 1940-50 and most of the trees were planted sometime in the mid to late 1800's.

don't tell me you got the other branch off the same tree Frank?
i wonder what sort of soil it grew in and its orientation with respect to prevailing weather conditions? Cough, splutter. Look of innocence.

Frank,
Any chance of some pics that highlight the grain?
Also, would it possible to get the blanks a bit larger, so that they can be used on the larger kits? I just bought some BOW (Bethlehem Olive Wood) blanks and they are 140 x 20 x 20.

Geez, I would have never thought that it was this hard to entice people to show a bit of goodwill!
For the photos, see "beginner's pride" under woodturning-general. Sorry about the poor photography skills. "Bethlehem" olive? Have marketers no shame? (Rethorical question, we all know the answer! )
For the size, maybe: I am just learning. Where did you get those, and how much do they charge?
The US standard size blanks appear to be 5 x 3/4 x 3/4. Can anybody confirm?
Cheers

I guess mine are called "jumbo blanks". They are 5 1/2 x 3/4 x 3/4.
I won them on eBay. The seller is from the US. There is 15 in the pack and they cost $35 plus $10 postage (US Dollars). The marketers distinguish between Bethlehem and Jerusalem as, apparently the BOW is more highly figured than the olive wood from Jerusalem. Therefore BOW blanks attract a higher price. Yeah I know, I'm gullible.

Well, it all seems to make sense.
You paid about $A 4 each for the bigger blanks, which seems to be fair.
I am happy to commit to the smaller size being just a minimum, with the aim to get as many as possible to the "jumbo" size.
There could be some logic behind the marketing hype also: my guess is that the name is due to the source, not to a fancy species: i.e. plantations in the Bethlehem area are of a different species than those in Jerusalem: I believe they are all much the same in figuring, though, possibly the "african" olive having a darker contrast than the "european" one: see the thread "african olive" a few weeks back. Here is a slightly better picture for you to compare (and to show that I have been able to reduce the foot of the bowl, thanks for the tips!) Please note that it has been sanded only to 600 grit.
Cheers
