The ones that bring you back!
Just like they say with golf. Got back in the shed this morning and had a successful time this time!! Even tried my first acrylic. Sooo much different than working with timber, but enjoyable. First love would still be timber at this stage.... but who knows!!!?
They are Sierras (obviously)... timber is Yellow Siris, Silky Oak and my first Acrylic.
Life is good.... and Im ready with another half a dozen to play with tomorrow... hope the Timber gods smile sweetly
JennyLife's short.... enjoy it!!

G'day Jenny,
Ain't it great when pens work out . I really like the Silky Oak and although I'm not a big Sierra fan the acrylic looks good in that style as well.
I've also got a dozen blanks waiting for me in the shed but won't get near them till Tuesday now. Ah well ... Enjoy tomorrowDavid

Wonderful work Jenny.
Looks as though you are on the steep descent to addiction.

The Sierra is a great all around pen that is extremely good to have on hand for jotting notes. It is so handy and uses so little timber. You did a great job with yours. Good shape and the fit and finish are top notch. If you like a pen that lays down lots of ink smoothly, Parker makes a gel refill that is perfect for these pens. How did you put the final finish on the acrylic? It looks very good.

All are really nice looking pens. The Silky Oak is probably my favourite too, but I'm getting more and more in to acrylics and that one is very nice.

For the finish on the Acrylic, I used wet and dry up to 2000 and then the final finish was Rustins Burnishing cream. I was also surprised how good the final finish was with only those. Im sure I must have missed something.... but it looked great, so why fiddle with it!!!
What finishes do you recommend for Acrylics?

I just asked because, from the photos, it sure looked shiny. I've never turned an acrylic pen personally. From some of the work I've seen lately, I may have to consider it. I was wondering how long they stay shiny? I mean, will they eventually get fine scratches all over and appear dull? Is the surface of the acrylic as durable as a CA finish? And, has anyone ever put a CA finish on an acrylic pen?
Sorry. I have an inquiring mind. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

All very nice Jenny, great fit up and a nice finish on them all. Attachment 78907
You have the right way to finish the acrylics I have never tried CA but tried a wipe on poly and that really put a sheen on the Acrylic. As you can put CA on acrylic I can't see why it can not be used.

Thanks Sam, As a matter of fact I bought some Wipe On Poly yesterday to try.... how many coats would you normally put on timber and/or acrylics. Sure looks easier than Rustins. Will be curious to see the final outcome.

Very nice pens. I'm beginning to like acrylics more now, too
as for finishing them, I'm not sure I'd want to put anything on them at all. I usually
sand up to 600 and then do the MicroMesh, but I'm not really sure what grit equivalent
is. So I go up to the 12,000 and then usually use the Novus 2 polish after that.
It's just a liquid sandpaper/cutting agent. Some people use automotive polishes
which are also cutting agents.
With acrylic, the material itself IS the finish, no need to add anything. That's different
than a lot of woods, where we add a wax or an oil or maybe a shellac. Those are added
on top of the wood. But with the acrylic, the plastic material can be sanded to a high
gloss all by itself.
(I'm wondering what the grit equivalent of the Novus 2 is .?? )
