Default Osag Orange Or Is Osage Orange

Was given a piece of Osage Orange by Old Dog so I have turned into a New Pen set, thanks Old Dog, the pen had a blow out at one end when I hit a knot, so filled it with shavings and CA and then sanded down to avoid further blowout: I then put the pen clip so that the blowout bit does not show, I really love the colour of this wood. As Toni has said it is Osage Orange, grows in America but my last lot of pen blanks came from around the Armidale area. Sometimes they call it Bois d' Arc. A beautiful timber to turn. The top half of your pen shows a nice colouration in the grain, your fit and finish look good, personally I am not a fan of the wasp shape in the slimline, but it comes down to what you or your customers like.

Gotta agree with BDar about the shape, but I must admit it feels more comfortable in the hand than a straight-sided slimline.

I love Osage Orange, the colour always makes me ooh and aah and it can have some amazing grain patterns. Was gifted with a nice sized slab recently (Thanks again, !) and I just can't bring myself to cut it down to pen blanks. Yet.

The black kit really sets off the colour of the wood, 'twas a damned good choice, Amos! No pix of the blow-out, though...?

(Hmmm... I can see my black kits reducing in number soon. Assuming I can bear to introduce Ms Slab to Mr Bandsaw. )

Thanks for the comments, I guess shape must be personal choice because I cannot bear to make a plain jane straight jacket slimline, But, having said that, i am sure there are times when straight turned pens look better, so I hope i have the good sense to see when that time is.
Skew I have taken photos of the top and if you look closely just under the clip at the top you may see the filling in that was done. Amos

I think that for that one, after giving the patch a few days to set I would've taken the end of the tube to the linisher and shortened it a mm or two. Squares up the end again nicely, whereas using a pen-mill runs a risk of knocking the patch out.

Not a criticism, just a suggestion on "how to hide Oopses." Trust me, I've had plenty of practice.

I love the wood and the black kit sets it off nicely. I've yet to run across that particular timber, but will look for it now.

Thanks again Skew, trouble with me is that sometimes(very often) my time constraints make me rush ahead instead of sitting back and asking questions and then trying the suggestions. So instructions are always well taken.

G''Day Amos you have done a really good job with the Osage Orange blanks l like that kit too Great looking set. Also l have found with this timber it is a good idea to seal the ends with ca before you put the blanks on the lathe.

    Default Black pen kits

Thanks for the comments one and all, by the way, I think DJ should start putting out feelers for another batch of them, I am getting close to the end myself. Amos
