I cut mine with saw below which is a Nobex and then give a light sand on a flat surface

but to make a new colour what I do is with the parting tool is cut write back to the tube this makes it a square cut and then you just reglue where you parted off with another part of the pen blank. then turn it to desired shape. If you mill the square that you putting it on that will make it square too you will get a perfect fit.
does that make it as clear as mud???

do you know that spider blank you sent me Neil? well i made a custom centre band for that because somehow i cut the blank about 4mm to short. i just got some paduak, drilled a 7mm hole thru it and stuck it on the tube hanging out and milled it as usual.


i recently bopught the dvd of turning pens and pencils and in that, they make a antler centre band by milling one side and parting off the other.

other than that, i havent really got any other ideas on how to square it up and i'm pretty sure you would have known about those two ideas anyway

btw, i wouldnt use a CMS either, maybe a disc sander with it double side taped to a push stick?

Neil we have the larger centre rings like on the Pen 1F.
They are $2.50 for a 5 pack.

You're a turner aren't you?

I simply drill a blank offcut and mount it on the mandrel by clamping it between tubes. Then I use a knife converted into an ultra-thin parting tool to dress one end of the blank squarely, right down to the mandrel. Retighten the mandrel, then part off at the required length.

Occasionally a very light sand is required to trim any dags around the hole from separating, but not as often as one would think.

Skew - yep I was thinking along the lines you described, just my parting off isn't always perfect, but the thin blade idea is a good one. Perhaps I should make one - I was thinking from a hack-saw blade.

Sam - good idea, I have one - but me hand saw 50, hmm maybe not, I have troubles working anything you can't plug in

Toni - Brilliant ideas, I really like them both.

Hmm need to think on these ideas some more. The pens are Scribbly Gum burl and I was going to use the Swamp Mahogany for a band. It is not a contrasting timber, more a blend of colours, and so I could say both came from the job. I was worried about the SH splitting as a separate piece, so Toni's ideas should really work well.

Being lazy however , I also like Jim's bands. Jim, can you bring some to the WWW show? I might buy them anyway so I have some spare fat bands. I will also need half a dozen of those CrushGrind mechanisms if you have them.

um...its currently glued to my mandrell. i only turned it yesterday and i used CA as the finish and because i used a custom CB, i removed the middle bushing and the two halves are stuck together and i cant remove the two stuck halves from the mandrel ( as of yet ). a pic will come if i can get it off of the damn thing.

Jim.Ilike the idea of being able to buy larger centre bands. Do you only have them in gold or do they come in other platings as well.
