Oh I found this image in my Flickr stream that i took in January last year, to show what happens when you continually runa white piece of clay through while streaks are occurring. And it seems my Pasta Maker was an Arcosteel - isn't that supposed to be a good brand??

You mean it went from white to grey going through the rollers ,or just the streaks ,that is almost a chemical color change by the looks ? cheers ~ John

Yup, the grey piece on top was originally the white colour you see below, just run through over & over with the streaks gradually blending into the white. If you can be bothered going to the effort, you can wipe the black streaks off each time with a cloth dipped in a little metho, although I'm not sure over time what effect the metho will have on the integrity of the clay. At the least i'd imagine it would dry it out.

Well after spending time this afternoon dismantling and reassembling my Atlas to see if it was worthwhile changing rollers turns out not to be so . But in saying that I think I discovered a possible fix . Underneath the rollers are 2 spring loaded blades to wipe the rollers and guide the mixture down and out the bottom . Now they have a square edge and I noticed on mine there was clay residue build up .not a lot but enough to cause problems with color streaks as the clay is rolled past them . They are imposible to clean unless you dismantle the sides and pull out the spring tensioners ,on mine they will then basically fall out . Might be worth leaving them out altogether ,as long as the clay does not try and stick to the roller and keep going around ,that could get messy .
Cheers JohnG'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

I think you'll find a couple things wrong with that theory
1. The scrapers DO catch clay, which DOES cause coloured blobs of clay to spot future colours, and DO need to be cleaned to prevent this, but that is not the cause of the dark streaks. I manage to keep my scrapers "clean enough" with a bit of wiping under the rollers and running the pasta machine backwards, but it is recommended to pull them apart and give thema good clean regularly. Having said that, I haven't had to pull my Makins apart yet.
2. The clay WILL keep following the rollers if the scrapers are removed. Maybe not when cold, but once it warms up, it can get quite sticky.
