    Default My latest pen

    ............and I didn't make it

Was at the Camberwell Markets the other Sunday and spotted a stall with some pens for sale. Some fountain pens and some others, all were new and offered in basic presentation boxes.

One in particular caught my eye as on first look it appeared to have a series of Zodiac signs on it and I thought it might make a nice idea for a pen.

On closer inspection they were actually sports signs, but that closer inspection also revealed a good quality pen, even though it was of Chinese manufacture.

Quite an unusual design, the cap pushes on the barrel and is held in place by a ridged nylon insert and it can be posted , the clip is unusual with a nicely rounded finial with the barrel maetrial repeated in it, the nib appears to be a good quality one and the converter works very smoothly and is one I haven't seen before.

All in all it wouldn't disgrace itself if it was displayed by most of us with our creations.

The thing that really floored me was the displayed price, wait for it .....$12!

With tongue in cheek I asked him if he would take $10 for it, he took it

So I now have this in my collection and I have to admit I like it more every time I look at it and play with it. Haven't inked it yet, but I will do that sooner rather than later.

Don't be sorry you got a nice pen If we want others to appreciate and buy our offerings it doesn't hurt to buy some ourselves if they appeal , I did a similar thing a couple of weekends ago at a local market I was checking out ,picked up an all gold pen and letter opener in a designer style, parker refill and a box we would normally pay 2-3 dollars ,cost $10 dollars ,I almost couldn't get away quick enough lol. Yes, if I sat down and added up what we would pay for just some of those components, I could strip it down and be way in front.

Makes you wonder how they can do it.

Pretty dame good, let alone for $10

I assume a chrome finish? I reckon I could sell it for at least $50

Yes, chrome, but it appears to be good quality plating, it is quite a heavy pen at 55gr.

Don't know what material the sleeve on the barrel is, I'm guessing stainless.

I have seen a lot of pens of a far lesser quality being offered at $50 Neil, let's face it most woodturning club events I go to there are any number of very basic slimlines being offered fo $15-25.

When I was looking around overseas for some different types of pen kits one place in particular had stacks of pens that they were prepared to sell me and the quality of the looked good (although a little hard to tell) the prices of them were absolutely amazing and no wonder you got the pen for 10 bucks

    Cheers Ian

Yes Ian, there are any number of fountain pens from China on Ebay, as low as $3.99, have always wondered what the quality of them would be like.

Fred, I like the style and design. To make them at that price all is in tooling costs and quantity.
To put the designs into the body by hand would be an artistic achievement. Amos

$10. Gee that is ok. Makes you wonder just how they do it. Must be very very very cheap labour to start with. Wonder what the quality of the metal is ( as far as health) in the making.
