    Default My First Ever Pen

This is the first pen I have made.

It started out as a tasmanian oak tree. Some other person cut it down, don't know his/her/their name.

It was then milled by some other unknown person.

Finally it was packaged and shipped to Bunnings in Wodonga, also by unknown persons from where I purchased it as a 23.5 mm dowell rod 2.4 metres long.

The sales persons name was Brian.

I bought it home and didn't use if for the purpose intended so I left it to season on the top shelf of storage unit in shed for 18 months.

It was finally ready this morning, so I took my (t)rusty hacksaw and cut 118.5 mm length from base stock, drilled a 1/8 hole slightly off centre in the left end to a depth of 56.75 mm. To do this I used my sher drill press and a sutton drill bit.

I carefully removed the insides from a pen that I had previously liberated from the Albury Branch of the NAB. (they have lots of pens laying around and so wouldn't miss this one.)

I cut it to size using a large olfa cutter (a red one, not the yellow one) and very carefully inserted into the pen blank that I had prepared.

I did not finish it with any grade of paper, I left it natural.

All up, excluding the time taken to go to Bunnings and season the timber, it took me about 3 minutes and 48 seconds to make. This includes time taken to walk from the comfort of my recliner chair to garage to commence the project when the overwhelming urge to make a pen overcame me.

It is not addictive, I will not be making another one. EVER.

Jokes aside you have just given me an idea for an arthritic relative who has wanted one of my pens but they are too thin (even the Sierras) for her to use... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Nice pen, how did you come up with such a novel approach to pen making?
Up until now most pens Ive seen here have been soooooo boring, pardon the pun, or is that pen?

Al, that is a very witty and original comment, just like the old days.

I can understand why, it might take a minute or two for a pen like this to be sanded properly. I would start with a grit of 1 and work your way up.

You should really try the BLO/CA finish on this. Put it on the lathe, turn
the speed up high and hold the paper towel with BLO and CA up against
the turning. You'll have to press VERY hard to do this.

Done on purpose, my hand is a little oddly shaped, and this brought it back into line. Was lucky to get it right on my first attempt.

And to think some people go to university to get an arts degree to make something as good as this. Go figure, you did it on your first go Geoff, NPGJ.
