Latest pen
Did these a few days ago using a blank that was from a material made in Italy. It was made for the Shaeffer Pen Co. years ago and from my knowledge it is not made any more. I put it on a Sierra and also a bullet pen because I thought it resembled green camauflage alot. The depth and light refractions can not be appreciated with a photo but it was a nice material to turn. And polishes really nice. It required sharp tools and a cooled drill bit. Iturned using a skew. Thanks for looking.

Nice work on all pieces Jt!
I wonder just how different the material used on blanks like those is compared to what we commonly use.

I used a little info from alot of people but the most infornative tutorial I used was found over at the IAP penturning site and was done by Rick Herrell http://content.penturners.org/articl...rtridgepen.jpg I see that link did not work. Just go to the IAP site http://www.penturners.org/forum/index.php and look in the libray there. So much info to be had.
I also learned to do the powdercoating which actually was not that hard. I like the powdercoating because it will keep that pen with that mirror like finish forever. Will not tarnish and no need to have the customer polish it. Powdercoating is also tougher than just lacquer. I also like the look with the real bullet instead of a kit nib. So I learned it that way.
Thanks all for the kind words. This material is a bit different than other acrylics in that it cuts more uniform and smoother for a lack of a better word. It will melt faster so sharp tools are a definite. The colors are so deep and like I said the refractions are great when the light hits it. I think the specs for this material were probably a bit higher than the ordinary acrylics we see. I do like it alot and I wish I could get more of the other colors they had at one time.

Lovely work.
It almost looks like some sort of shell (ie Abalone)

Very nice indeed, like the bullet pen a lot. Is that a 30.06? I have just bought a heap of unprimed .308 shells and bullets, so am about to give this a go.
Like you, I like the look of the real bullet.
The acrylic also looks good on the Sierra, great job. Did you get that from Elliot Landes?

Nice pens and finishes, just as an aside, did you powdercoat the bullet as well as the casing ? or not needed. cheers

Thanks all for the kind words and to answer a couple of the questions. It does have the look of the Abalone Shell. It does have a glass look to it when the light hits it right.
I got this from a guy over the IAP site by the name of Larry Faulkner ( PIPEYETI)
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41127 That was the link to the ad he had. I do not believe he has anymore unfortunately and from my knowledge it is not available any more. I could not find anyone else selling it.
As far as the bullet goes it is a 30-06 shell.
As far as powdercoating goes, I drill the bullet and put it into the shell and crimp it. I have the tube in the shell and I solder my tubes in. Then I powdercoat the whole thing. The next day I put in the transmission and turn the top and assemble that. I have turned antler for the tops and used 308shells as the top and turned different other acrylics for the top. I like this material because of it resemblance to green camauflage. I do not have much of this stuff so will have to be limited on where I use it.
Hope that answered a few of the questions. Thanks for looking.
