New pen turning book
Hi all
I have recently read books on penturning by Barry Gross and another by Christensen and Burningham. Unfortunately, both books lacked a bit of substance that I thought was needed.
There is an absolute wealth of knowledge on this forum in all aspects of timber, pen turning, photography and marketing. That knowledge would be very beneficial to new penturners if contained in one document. Feel free to correct me if it has already been done but I haven't been able to find the publication, so -
A proposal - If those with the expert knowledge were interested, each could write a chapter and have it published in a Penturner's Bible.
Everyone who contributed would be acknowledged in the book under the relevant Chapter heading and all sale profits, if agreed, could be donated to a charity of majority choosing. Perhaps as it's mainly a man's shed thing, to Postrate Cancer Research or if your would prefer to a children's medical research foundation or whatever the majority agrees to. Just an idea but either way I do not want to profit from it personally.
As a suggestion to begin with I thought the following chapters -
Timber types for pen making and their characteristics
Lathes
Tools and methods for sharpening tools
The styles of pen kits and where to purchase
Methods for preparing the blanks
Turning the blanks - Timber, Acrylic, Leather, etc
CA polishing
WOP polishing
French polishing, etc
Laser engraving
Safety
Marketing in Australia
The list can be added to, to gain even more expertise.
This is simply a thought that will provide relevant Australian advice and perhaps raise a bit of money for a charity. But before it could ever become a reality your support is needed as I don't have the technical expertise to do it alone.
OK - your ideas members.

A nice idea Greg but as you said there is a wealth of knowledge on this and other forums. When it comes to advanced ideas, people have worked hard on design and technique and I am sure would be willing to share their knowledge, if it is shown others have at least have had a go. Some ideas they may not because it is how they make money. I have Kip and Rex' book and thought it was well written and with a lot of info for a pen crafter to advance on. Barry's I haven't read so I can't comment. This thread sounds like one I just read on the IAP. The way ideas, techniques and pen styles evolve it is always changing and what may be advanced one day won't be the next and it will be just another reference book. Whereas with forums the ideas evolve and are discussed and are archived here or in your own files. I wish you the best and hope it comes together for you.

Also a chapter on how to CA fingers together, another on how to CA fingers to the Bottle, another on how to spill CA and step on it and have your shoes CA'd to the Floor!!!! ps--have perfected some of those techniques!!!!!
BUT--on a serious note, that is a great idea, there is already a wealth of knowledge on the Forum, especially in "Tutorials", it would a great work to collate the material into relevant chapters, also a compilation of the Videos on a DVD disc would be very useful. I have found that if you follow the threads diligently, every now and then another piece of useful advice makes its way into my head. AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;

Almost forgot - those interested please email me at [email protected] with your ideas and area of expertise and also indicate which charity you would like any profits to go to.
This is the concept stage. If I can get enough interest then we'll move onto the planning and writing stage and get things rolling.
I think it can be a success.

Hi all
So far 3 of us are interested in pursuing the idea of a book. Of the 3, 2 are very experienced wood workers. Guess who the third is - me!
Here are some other ideas received from one of the members. I have not identified him as I haven't got his approval to do so yet.
Casting is another specialty area.
But, things like
1. Basic Tools
2. Which lathe
3. which blanks
4. drilling and selecting drill bits
5. Laminating blanks
6. Preparing the Tubes
7. Gluing in tubes
8. Turning-which tool to use
9.Blow Out repairs
10. Sanding
11. Finishing -CA, WOP, Shellawax, raw etx
12. Pricing and Selling
13. Forums-what to expect- how to behave- what attitude to have-pen swaps etc.
14. Other Pointers
I think the 14 points provided by the member are getting close to a good layout. Any one else got any other ideas.
The concept may not be a Wilbur Smith novel in terms of sales but it will be very instructive for those who follow our craft and it just might provide some money to a charity.
If you are interested email me direct at [email protected]
Thanks
Greg

I agree with darren and feel that everything you need to know is in a tutorial somewhere. I personally have downloaded tutorials from just about any of the woodwork/Pen forums that I am a member of and I must have hundreds. I have tried to sort them all out into section on my PC not an easy task lol. I then keep them all there and when either starting a new type of project I can then go to those tutorials and read them. I also just open up tutorial periodically just to read them and learn as much as I can. I feel that the forums are better than having a book made because if you have a problem you can go atraight to the forum and generally your problems are solved almost straight away.
Cheers Ian
