pen clips
Hello to all! It has been a very busy summer. Right now I am working on some scroll work for an upcoming show. But I'm still turning pens as well. In fact, I am turning 25 slimlines to donate to my church for a fund raiser in early Sept.
I've noticed that more and more people are saying that they wished that there was NOT a clip on the pen so that they could enjoy the full grain of the wood.
Do any of you get that request very often? I never really thought about not including a clip, but I guess it would be fine without one.
Thoughts?

Had the same thoughts about the clips. Made one without and liked it but there is the problem that it flops around in the pocket and will roll around on the desk, especially if it isn't level ).
I guess some folks would just leave them on the desk and never haul them around.
I made up a disassembly tool for the slimlines and it is easy enough to pound the cap off and remove the clip. Might be an option to customize on the spot if the customer desires?

I can't say that I've noticed an increase in people asking... but there've always been a few.
Sometimes to maximise the wood, maybe, but other times I'm sure it's because they're ceremonial pens for signings, etc, or to go into a desk set where they're held by trumpets. I've always thought the clips added "clutter" to the look myself, but I've been told I'm weird.
The Foxy one has the best approach IMHO...

I have had one request for a pen without a clip.
In general women don't put pens in their pockets.... most of them don't have pockets.... thats why thay have hand bags and misplace stuff like keys and hairbrushes.
If you are talking comfort a clip is a pain.
Be warned though
I left the clip of a pen9... click pen.... & I had to modify the mechanism to make it cycle properly... the loss oof the thickness of the clip made a big difference..... there is a spacer tube inside I had to shorten.
cheersAny thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
Most powertools have sharp teeth.
People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.

Skew....somebody told you that you were weird? GASP! I am so shocked Just kidding. Sorry, I tried and tried, but I couldn't let it go.
Sometimes I will take a left over chuck of wood and take one of those stepped drill bits, drill a hole in the middle of it, slap it on a plate and turn it into a dome shape and use it as a pen holder. For those pens, I leave the clip off.
Cheers,
Rick
