Pen drills
G`day does anyone have a metric to imperial drill chart the reason being I measured the tube for a sierra it`s 10mm but the ins say 27/64. The elegant beauty measured 9mm but ins say 23/64. Will the metric be right or not quite right?
Thanks Mick

Mick, depending on the kits and glues your using... close to might be enough for some but if you can get a hold of the suggested size then it would be better. I had to get a 35/64 in on order but for the price of the kit thought 14mm wasn't close enough. Having said that I think there is one kit that I use a metric equivalent (can't remember which one, think its a letter drill bit?)
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Mick by the sounds, 23/64", your Elegant Beauty came from either GPW or Carrolls. The Sierra Elegant beauty from Addictive Pens is the same size as the normal Sierra at 27/64". They are two different sizes.

G`day Bdar you are right on the money(Carrolls Not that there is a problem with that). I have drill bit for baron(25/64) now I need 23/64and 27/64 for Sierra and E Bs^#@*.
Mick
Checked drill charts 25/64 just under10mm 27/64 just under 11mm. Do I use araldite and hope it takes up enough space or do I add to the drill collection?Last edited by mick61; 30th January 2009 at 09:57 PM. Reason: P.S

Mick ! can you measure the tubes ,if you have some clearance so the tube slides through easily you should be fine ,you could test drill a piece of scrap to see if the tubes fit easily ,if so you are fine ,the less clearance between wood and tube ,the more meat in the pen hehe. good luck .

Mick to be honest, just because you use a thicker glue, doesn't mean you will get the tube with and even surface of glue to get it perfectly centered. I personally bite the bullet and get the correct drill for the job. If you are going to keep making the Elegant Beauty I am sure the correct drill bit will pay for itself in quick time.

Darren is spot on the cost of a drill far outweighs the failures the better the fit the more central the tub will be

The costs up to 13mm or 1/2 " are more than reasonable and readily available as these are the most common sizes it seems, after that the costs skyrocket in "ozzie" and availability becomes a bit of a treasure hunt as is mentioned in other threads
sometimes its better value to buy a set of drills and get them all, its a lot cheaper than individual drills you will find . Good luck ,its a bit like your first pen costs a fortune because of all the peripherals you need, then as you try new kits bushes and drills for each add to the initial cost of each one ,but all good hehe!

To quote and expert "don't go blamin the tool box, You need the right tools for the job"
From Bob The Builder himself.
Any money spent on extra tools in the workshop is money well spent. I have a full set of imp in 64ths to half inch and met in 0.5mm up to 13. Maybe an overkill but its important to get a good fit. I have found that in anything, comprimize is followed by dissapointment>
