Andy I have a Jet mini VS and Nova here, pen making gear and a few kits available. Slimline, Sierra and Jnr Gent blanks as well.

An hour won't do it 4 maybe from start to finish.

If you want to get your own kits Timberbits at Yagoona is on the way.

Best teacher would be Simonatra he's up in the Hunter region

Hey Andy. The turning videos on the Timberbits website are really helpful, and their shop is just over at Yennora in southwest Sydney.

I turned my first pen at a Timber & Working With Wood show in a demonstration, and went home and made some more. Within 5 pens ($20 total cost including pen kits and blanks) I ended up with something actually not bad.

Never any one on one apart from 5 minutes at the woodwork show but after lots of reviewing forum posts here I'm getting there and you will too.

I've done over 50 pens in the last 6 months and well and truly hooked

I agree Ray show me the initial steps on turning, very helpful in having someone watch you before you make a cut. The pen making can be very additive as I have not stopped at one.

As to the 4 hours, 1 hour to make the pen and another 3 chatting.

Gee's thanks Dorno and Christos I'll have to be careful and try live up to those words. Mind you if he's had lessons off I doubt there will be anything I can teach him.

I am an amateur turner in it for the fun nothing ore if I can share what i have been taught picked up and gained from this forum then I'll do my best to impart what I can.

Andy my apologies for such a crap day at turning pens weather was kind nice and cool.

BUT

Timbers just didn't want to play fair at all. a cross cut Huon snapped in half while drilling.(will become segemented)
A Mahongany split in half while drilling. (repair will happen)
Chip out on a Spalted Macadamia become a blow out (repair will happen ) to nice to destroy.
Unknown wood not one but two blow outs. (I will continue with)

Not a disastrous day as I met a top bloke.

NO PHOTOS!!! take 2 demerit points. Do with them what you will.

Photos of disasters and especially fixes are always a good thing. Disaster photos always make me feel better because I know I am not alone and fixes photos just show me what I could do if I had any talent whatsoever.

Woodturning groups...

Well, I have spent the past 2-3 years trying to convince the blokes at The Hills Men's Shed that they should concentrate on turning, but, alas, I have only convinced 3 to give it a go . One of them is 93 years old . He has made pens for just about everyone in his family and street - he is just ruining the market for us serious pen turners. The other two have joined Western Sydney Woodturners, I hope that is the right name - Seven Hills or there abouts. They seem to have lots of machines and some very experienced members\instructors They have some amazingly talented turners in their ranks. I haven't joined because..., well because I don't want to, but that's just me. Anyone in the Sydney's western suburbs that wants to learn woodturning would do well to have a look at the work they do

Bother photos is what makes it all worthwhile.....
One question was it one or four hours......and how much of that was classroom????

No class room here all are treated equal

Andy turned up at 9 and left about 3pm there was some chance to talk over MT (I am a slave driver) as Andy did the work a lunch break and back into it.

I just wish it had been a better day for Andy with blanks and me for getting about being my normal stool is broken ATM.
