    Cool Pen with History

Here's a Roman Harvest from David at Timberbits with a not so spectacular looking timber wrapped around it. In fact I don't even know what type of wood it is.

More importantly I know where it came from. This is timber from the seating that used to be in the old WH Ponsford Stand at the MCG before it was demolished in 2002/2003. Hence the piece of wood with a number, in the back of the picture, that was from the original piece I used for the pen.

This was made for a customer that managed to get hold of the timber when they demolished the old stand. As part of the package I also finished a small piece of the top of the wood to accompany the pen. The customer was very impressed and I'm in the middle of filling another order of 11 pens of various models.

If anyone knows what type of wood this would be please let me know. I have included another photo comparing some of the wood taken from three different planks. As you can see the colour on one of them is quite a contrast to the other two.

As always C&C more than welcome.

    Cheers,

    Graeme

Well done, history is there so we do not forget and you have just preserved some of it forever with a beautiful pen.

    Default great job

That is very nice and worthy of being placed in Members Museum at the MCG, because of what it is made from.
Congrats on keeping a piece of history alive and being used.

    Thanks Rumnut and Cookie.

I'm currently trying to think up some ideas for making a box that matches the pen. I'm thinking of using a part of the wood that still has paint on it for a handle.

    Cheers,

Can't help you out with the timber type. The stand was built by A V Jennings as the Western Stand before being renamed the WH Ponsford Stand. Jennings will probably have a record of the timber in its archives if you want to do a bit of research. Similar pens to yours with timber from the stand are selling for around $200 a pen without the box. Check the web and have a look at the type of boxes being offered with the pens at additional cost of course.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the info and advice Greg,

I was thinking about trying the MCC as well to see if they have any records. I noticed that the other pens available appear to be in the European/Mont Blanc style.

I was thinking that a higher end pen would be more appropriate and I'm in the process of making for myself both a Roman Harvest and a Pristina out of the material that was left over. Ultimately I might go for a Rollerball & Fountain Pen matched set in a box with laser engraving but I guess I'll wait and gauge the interest on the ones I've made.

    Cheers,

    Graeme
