Hey There,
I have had some experience with getting stuff out of China, through my work and some Business contacts, the Chinese stuff is usually Half the price and about 1/3 the quality (unless you have a real good Go Between over there) or you spend a lot of time over there keeping an eye on quality control, then there is the issue of Minimum orders (Usually 5000 units minimum) and then the Logistics issue of getting the stuff here, on time
Once you get all that sorted, then you have the delivery of small quantities all over the place, Aussie Post isn't bad up to 3kg, but then look out.
I still can't see any reason for trying to re-invent the wheel, when it has already been done.

I have no problem buying Chinese gear if the quality is up to, what I, and my customers expect.
I spend a bit of time reading the posts on an American pen forum, what you are trying to do is not new. Quite a few others have gone down the same path, one point that keeps coming up, is the quality control, and backup ( or lack of ).
Who is going to wear the cost of the kits that have the problems, should it be Bupton alone, because he started and organised it?
I usually buy my kits etc in small batches as I need stuff. The local suppliers carry a huge range of different kits and blanks, I can put an order in and have the stuff in my mailbox in 2 days. On the very few times that I have had a problem with a pen kit, a phone call to the supplier, and it has been rectified, no questions asked ( so to speak ). Will that happen with this type of buy ? I think not.
If someone wants to try and save a few cents by buying this cheap stuff, by all means go ahead.
But its not for me, I sell 95 percent of the pens I make, and I charge what I think is a fair and reasonable amount for a quality pen, I would rather spend a little bit more on the parts and have peace of mind, which is why I dont sell any pens with the cheaper platings on them. I would like to think my customers will be still using the pen they bought from me, in couple of years time and it still looks good.

As far as I no the kits are the same ones you can get in stores all over AU. I will be getting some samples to determine that.
