Pen Lid Etiquette ?
Hi I have a question. I have been asked to make a pen with the egyptian flag which is red on top, white middle and black on the bottom. To put this flag upside down is an insult to them. From what I have researched on the internet. So with a lid which way would you call the top. Do you make your pen for closed or opened?? What would you do? Or make the pen one way and the lid the other way so when one is open or closed there is still a flag done right? what would you class the top of the pen lids?
I look forward to your replies
Toni
ps the pen is a baron fountain pen if that information helps with decision.

I would presume that the end of the lid is considered the top of the pen because whether you have it in you pocket or if you put the cap on the end of the pen whilst in use the end of the top is always up.
It really depends if you are making the flag only on the lid of the pen or are you going to carry it onto the body of the pen as well?
PS. got the pens - thanks heaps!Have a nice day - Cheers

I would probably say the capped end off the lid is the top, as Wood Butcher says, it's always pointing up when in the pocket or when in use.

G'Day Toni
Going by the attached pens I feel the top is the top of the lid.

Its a pen in Egyptian colours
Toni,
I may be missing the point here. The timber/materiel you are using will roughly represent the colours found in the Egyptian flag is that right?
If so, then I would not worry too much about any flag etiquette that might come to your attention. Its a pen, not an actual flag that is going up a pole outside a building. I don't know that I would be too concerned about offending someones national pride with a pen. The product itself will likely mean a lot more to the receipent than any momentary qualms about thoughts of "hey, this is like the Egyptian flag but its upside down".........
However, if it still bothers you, I would suggest that you make the cap only with these colours and use a fairly undistinguished or neutral timber for the body of the pen, that way, no matter what way the cap is on the pen, be it closed or open, the "flag" will always be on top and the correct way up.......

Thanks Ray that what I did. I typed out a note that says
This pen was made in reference to the symbolic colors of your flag.
According to ancient and heraldic traditions much symbolism is associated with the colors. The colors of the egyptian flag represents the following:
White- peace and honesty
red- hardiness, bravery, strengthe and valour
black-Determination
The gold was added in the pen in honour of the the eagle that is the centre of your flag.

I'm a tad disappointed... the Egyptian flag has a yellow Eagle of Saladin in the middle of the white stripe (plain red, white, black horizontal stripes are Yemen's flag) and I was wondering how you were going to put the eagle in. Was hoping for ideas I could pinch.
Ah well. Just out of curiosity, is there any reason you made the ends of the cap yellow but also added white to the lower barrel?
Oh... and loading a cartridge? With a good fountain pen kit and everything going to plan, (ie. no shortened tubes, etc. you know, tweaking things to cover booboos. ) you just unscrew the nib assembly, slip the cartridge inside the barrel and replace the nib. As it tightens up, it'll automagically seat the cartridge and pierce it.
With cheaper kits, or modified tube lengths, this doesn't always happen... so it's safer to unscrew the nib assembly and push/pierce the cartridge on by hand. Then screw the whole assembly back into the barrel.

no no eagle but the lady buying it is going to see if she can get it lasered on for him. I baled at that kind of tricky stuff.. Why did I adde the extra white well after I decided I was not going to totally get the flag I went with adding more white because in there beleifs peace and honesty and this man is a doctor and I thought they were good quality for a doctor to have so I added the white. My original plan was a whole white pen but decided to add the colours as an after thought. I am sorry to dissapoint you

Pushing the wall again, eh Toni? Well done.
You completed it while I was asleep, I guess (still yesterday here, y'know), but here's my "advice" anyway. When I read your first post, I figured an effective construction would be something like red, white, black, white, red, RWBWRWB, ... Upon learning about the gold eagle, perhaps a gold stripe in the middle of the whites. These would be very short stripes, though. The gold stripe in the middle of the white could still be an adequate representation. Your note on the symbolism covers any inversion "sins" too. But perhaps not any sins: Opened for writing both patterns are in their proper orientation; the rest of the time probably hidden in a pocket.
