Pen Mandrels
Hi,
Some questions on pen Mandrels.
I have come across a couple of different mandrels while reading up on pen turning.
1 High Precision Drill Driver System from Berea Hardwoods
2 Professional Pen Turning Mandrel from Woodcraft.
Are these just the same mandrels with their names changed, and then have a different asking price, or are they really a better type of mandrel? And if they are better can we buy them here somewhere?
Thanks
John

John, Berea have mandrel A which is 7mm and mandrel B which is a bit heavier for your parker style pens. I get mine through Car-a-tec I have about 12 now, mainly all adjustable ones each set up for the different styles that I do. You will find some people have issues with the adjustable one, I haven't, like everything it comes down to choice.

Adjustble mandrell
I just got my adjustable one last week I like it much better that all the other ones I had, I kept on bending the darn things. I seem to put too much pressure on them . I have not bent the adjustble one and I do not htink I will.
I have done so much for so long with so little I can now do almost anything with nothing!

Hi,
Thanks for the replies, I shall have to see if I can track them down.
Bdar how many different adjustable ones are available? or do you mean you have several of the same type but just all set to different lengths?
Jude A looking at your location Mandeville, would that be on the beautiful island of Jamaica?
Thanks

John,
I have many of the one type, they are No. 1 morse taper for my lathe that I use for demos and if I need to use them on my big lathe I have a reduction morse taper, No. 2 down to No. 1. Some of the guys in the States that I know use the Beall collet chuck and just buy the shaft and hold it that way. So it is an adjustable mandral, but you can buy different collets so it becomes more versatile. Oh one day a couple of the would be nice in the kit.
