pen mill
Hi Guys and gals,
From time to time there has been posts about pen mills,so thought I would show you mine.
It is a jig I made to slide in the lath bed upto a faceplate sander. The 1/4 in bolt in the jig is drilled by the headstock so it is square to the face plate. The top half of the jig is hinged to the base plate so that it can be moved accross the face plate sander.Turned blanks are used on the bolt to accommodate different pens the same as with a pen mill.
I have been using this system for 10 months and find it easier, quicker and very accurate.I never use a pen mill these days.
Not my idea, passed on to me by a friend, but I love it.
Regards
terry

Creative! Well done.
Since I discovered putting the PSI pen mill in the drill press, it is pretty easy to do.
Still I am attracted to your style of doing things.
Thanks for sharing!

Somewhere on the forums, I showed a quick'n'simple way to mount a table to the lathe for linishing. What I didn't show, was that at a later date I drilled an 'ole to take a dowel in one end of the table, so I could use it just like that...!! (The table slides freely along the ways, of course. )
I prefer my barrel mill, but there are times when the dowel is just so handy... such as when I'm using the linisher setup to clean up a segmented blank and couldn't be bothered changing setups to true an end.

Made In Idaho -Pen Jig
I use a pen mill and I think it seems easy enough to do. I made a little jig out of a couple sections of wood, put my blank in the jig, and mill away. Sometimes I will hold the blank with some pliers and do it that way.
Over all.. I don't have allot of room in my little conner of the garage so I have too keep things easy. I think the pen mill is pretty handy, maybe a little more expensive in the long run of things but thats just my opinion.
Turned around in Idaho
