Not Pen but pen related!!
HI I had a break from making pens this weekend but I did try to make something for a pen. What do you think..My first pen stand. I am going to make a banksia pen to go in the flute. To go with the banksia pod clock. The base next time I will use a slice of tree rather than a scrap of wood. I was just having a look what it looked like.
This is also my first pill box I made it. It got a few holes but the knot had holes in that what caused the holes around the edge but I thought it be good for the first time to try. Love to know Skew how do you get that end neater?? I know you will know..Skew knows everything. LOL
bye Toni
PS the pillbox is only 5cm tall, wood not sure sorry but I do know I finished with shellawax glow

Everything? LOL! I wish! It's just that what you're doing now is something I've been playing with for a long time. Believe me, I've made all the usual mistakes, often several times, and I'm still inventing new ones! At least I'm still learning... for example, I've never seen a banksia nut used the way you've used that one in the desk set. I love it! The idea is pinched, BTW. And don't forget to show us the pen you turn for it. Which reminds me, I still have to turn some pens for one I made 6 months ago...
But that end? I gather it's where you parted off? There's a few differenet ways you can do it, starting from using a good sharp skew (when parting that shape of end) so the "ragged bit" is as small as possible. A sharp razor/knife to can be used to tidy it up, or a small file, and then sandpaper. To apply Shellawax, etc. properly to an item that's off the lathe you really need a buffing wheel on your bench-grinder.
Another way is to mount the cap in a jam-chuck, so you can turn the end and finish it normally.
A third way, is to drill out the top so you can fit a small knob or finial.
Geeze, I never seem to come up with an "Oh, it's easy, you just do this..." type answer, do I?

Good onya Toni,
keep up the turning, or you might need one of the tablets that fits in that
box. Hope you have something to wash it down with.
