Default a few pen pics in the new studio

Today I thought I would knock up a mini photography studio to give me somwhere to take pictures of small woodwork items.

I finished a bunch of pens this week so I tested the new studio out on them. From the results so far I reckon I need to experiment with lighting a bit more.

    Cheers

What Toni said... studio quality please!

(Oh... yeah... and a few shots of the studio you used to take shots of the studio... and one or two of the studio you used to shoot the studio used for shots of the studio wouldn't go astray. Nor would a few pics of the studio you used to... )
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I agree the first is the best of the bunch...but I think with a bit more experimenting I should be able to get better results.

thanks toni...but I cant take credit for the idea... it came from an article in the Australian Woodworker. I agree it is a simple and effective idea...it only took a couple of hours to knock up and can be rearranged for different effects easily.

The pens look great and I think you got the lighting spot on.

A constructive comment though, your depth of field is a bit out - ie the camera's focus is set for the center of the photo, but getting out of focus at the ends. Not sure of your camera, if its a good one you can change the F stop. If it is a small fully auto like mine, try taking the photo from further away, then crop the photo for the final product. That way more of the subject will be in focus.

    thanks DS

Thats exactly what I need to experiment more with...I did try mucking around with aperture and shutter speed (my camera does have some manual control). In fact I started out with a small aperture and slow shutter speed with the idea of getting a better depth of field but found I got better overall results from a larger aperture setting and faster shutter speed.

I dont know a lot about photography.. I just thought overall these pics were the best...and I did take quite a few

    cheers

    Hi Brown Dog,

Depth of field is a frustrating thing, the best thing to do is lay your tape measure out along the view then play with your settings with all the lights out besides the ones in your light box (centre your shots on the tape measure, it will make it easy to see your DOF).

Keep trying until you find the correct DOF for your camera and subject area. wright the settings down and stick them on the side of your light box mark the spots for your tripod and height etc.

Try different types of cloth or paper in front of your lights to soften the highlights, like your pens it takes time but when you get it right you will be happy.

PS How did your oven go?
I like to move it move it, I like to move it.

    Brown Dog
Nice looking pens and photos. The black background is quite dramatic. Did you have any trouble getting good color balance? Sometimes the auto exposure cameras can be fooled by that as well as by an all white background.
