Thread: Many pen turners in Canberra?
-
20th September 2013, 10:26 PM #16
If you guys want to do something informal out here sometime I'm happy to host a few pen turners. My shed is a disaster site but guests might force me into cleaning up a little. There's a great little gallery out here for inspiration if you're into other forms of woodwork as well
Forgot to add, congratulations on the latest additionLast edited by corbs; 20th September 2013 at 10:28 PM. Reason: Add congratulations
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Lol that night me and davettc were talking about pens and interrupted with a smirk on his face ' when you guys are ready to talk about real turning let us know' haha just before he gave us a lesson on bowl turning
Cheers Corbs, he's a great addition to our family. Does a weekend night time suit u at all? Timings a bit hard for me right now but I'm usually free of a night time so if we had something kick off at mine at say 630-7pm and now it's getting that bit warmer it shouldn't be too bad in garage and my sheds quiet when it comes to pens on the lathe so we coukd have a great session
I have been meaning on getting out to the gallery again as whrn I lived in bungendore i didnt appreciate WW as I do now

My wife's a shift worker but if she's off watch then a weekend evening would be fine for me.
I saw Geoff Hannah (he made this) at the gallery yesterday. I love being able to just go over and walk through the gallery. It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Ah yes! I have read about that masterpiece. There was a showcase on recently (i think, cant remember date) that had him explaining it and a dinner etc. Would have loved to go but stayed at home and turned a few pens as wife was on bed rest lol

Pen turning at Hall Men's Shed
At the Hall Men's shed we have 4 lathes which one is used for pen turning. Although we only one guy who is expert at pen turning there are others interested. We do a lot of other projects: wood turning, box making, furniture repair, community projects. We have access to the community cottage where we have morning tea.
We also have a great museum of old tools and there is the Hall Village museum also in the grounds of the old primary school.
I notice you are in Belconnen. Why don't you come and visit us sometime. We are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:30ish, although Thursday is our main day. We are at the old Hall Primary School in Palmer Street Hall.

Hey gmoss, i have been thinking about joining for a long time. Right now I'm off work for a few months so I might be able to drop by but as I work still and aren't looking at retired for at least another 30 years it's hard for me to make those times.
I could drop in with my daughter to check it out absolutely but as for getting work done in the garage it's a lot easier for me to be 6 steps away from the house it's a lot easier for me if I host something in my garage than elsewhere at the moment
I would love to come down and meet some people though. There are a few of us that were thinking of coming along to the next meet.
Are members working there outside of those hours or are the opening hours strictly adhered to?
Cheers, Nathan

Hall Mens Shed old tool museum
Hi Nathan
Although the times noted are our formal times, people can arrange other times. The only rule we have is that there must be at least two people present at all times for safety reasons. One of our members lives close by so it is easy to organise other times.
The shed museum (along with the hall school museum) is also open on the first Sunday of each month to co-incide with the Hall Markets. Next opening is the 6 October. The Hall School museum is also open on Thursday mornings - well worth a look. We also have a BBQ on the first Thursday of the month next BBQ is 3 October.
We would love to see you out there sometime. You will find it most interesting.
I also have a workshop at home but my wife does not like the sound of the power tools so I do most of my work at the shed. You will probably find the same particularly with the little one when your noisy times will be limited.
Look forward to meeting you
Graham

Hi Graham thanks for the additional info it's good to know.
I'd love to come and take a squiz next time we're out at hall markets for sure. The amount of machinery you have available to you sounds great. At the moment the only thing i use at night is my lathe and that's just a low hum. The other tools are daytime only.
That would be handy to go and work there keep the house away from your family. I will contact you closer to the hall market date and go from there
Thanks for your help graham
Everyone else, im still thinking of having a pen turning night at my place possibly in early / mid Oct and then again in Nov if and when dai sensei Neil is down in Canberra

Most probably it will be a night time thing from 6 ish onwards. Got plenty of lighting in the garage and should be nice weather then and the lathe doesn't make much noise of a night time so no problem there either. Night time at the moment I'm free to be in there garage all i like hopefully we can work something out.
If you wanted to come around sometime and talk shop anyway Ilya just drop me a pm

Okay so Ilya and Corbs, i was thinking of the 12th of Oct? From 630-7pm onwards, does that date work?
Theres a few others that may come along too so it should he a good sized small get together and should have enough room for all to see the lathe and everything else
Should be good, let me know and then PM me and I'll shoot out details
