Some more pens
Hi all,
These are the product of the last couple of months. I haven't had much shed time lately due to the new baby in our lives but I'm hoping to get a few more done in the next week. So from left to right (as it appears on my screen)
African Blackwood Elite Cigar. No finish due to inherent oiliness of the timber.
An acrylic gold cigar. Acrylic blank from Wood N Workshop. Can't recall the name on this particular type but Bruce might chime in on that one.
Bullet pen in Mexican Redheart. Finished with NC lacquer.
Cocobolo Elite Cigar. NC lacquer finish.
African Ebony Silver Sedona rollerball. No finish again (As requested by the person buying it from me)
El Grande in chrome, Eucalyptus Burl. Finished with wipe on poly.
Kingwood Elite Cigar. NC lacquer finish.
Red Mallee Burl gold Sierra, NC lacquer (I love this mallee! Bought a tonne of it from the woodshow)
Finally, Gold Sierra, Solomon Ebony. I didn't let this one get exposed to the air too long before finishing it (WOP) so it hasn't gone very dark but I expect it will do very slowly over time. Haven't tried the ammonia 'gassing' procedure yet.
In case anyone is wondering about the photos with the very bright white background, I took these with my phone camera but they ended up being blue from the flash so I re coloured them to show the colour of the wood to be as true as possible. I need a better lighting set up to do these photos but just haven't had the time yet.
Thanks for looking!"That's impossible. Nobody can give more than 100%. By definition that is the most anyone can give"

Nice batch of pens... and congrats on the new baby too
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Wow! a busy bee with a load of honey, some beautiful wood in those pens, looks like you did a good job on them.
Have you ever thought of finishing the African Blackwood with Danish Oil!? would take a few coats but comes out very nicely. AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;

i have thought of that amos but i'm going to see how this goes sans finish. I think it'll get a bit of patina from use given how oily it already is. The ebony one will likely do the same. For what it's worth, both pens feel fantastic in the hand.

Well done they are a nice bunch of pens
A big congratulation on your new baby
You are a lucky man to be able to get on the lathe after having a new baby I was band for months when our little tacker came along.Cheers Rum Pig

it hasn't been easy to get lathe time. She's 3 weeks old now so she's getting easier to manage, and the wife has encouraged me to have some "me time" when i can.
The nitrocellulose i use is mirotone spray lacquer. Not sure how tough it is yet. I use a pen finished in it every day and have done for 2 months and it's holding up quite well so far.
I actually found that my last pen which was finished in polyurethane didn't hold up well but i do have very corrosive skin. Every metal surface in my workshop has surface rust from my hands. I can't wear silver rings because they'll turn black in a couple of hours. Not sure if anyone else has this problem. I haven't had any complaints from any buyers though so it's probably just me.
Thanks everyone for the congratulations and praise
