Default Latest pens - new elite cigar kit

    Hi guys,
Thought I'd post my latest 2 pens - just assembled them last night.

They use the new cigar kit that Toni posted on the weekend, these ones are the 'other' colour scheme.

Top one is done in French oak, the bottom one is kingwood. Both are sanded to 1500, finished with rustin's plastic finish (lightly sanded after curing and buffed with their special polishing goo).

    Heres the pics:

    Another view:

The kingwood one is a Christmas pressie for my father. Rather pleased with how it turned out, I might just have to make something in kingwood for myself - it has an absolutely gorgeous finish to it!

Not so sure about the French oak - not completely convinced that it suits the kit .

    Any thoughts?

Yes I do have some thoughts,it is not for me to judge but comment the french Oak pen may lend itself to that same delightful shape of the Kingwood then perhaps comparisons would be in order.Separately the two pens are very neat and excellent pens for presentation.
Dark woods always win when well dressed and present more easily.Especially in a stripe contrast.
Looking at the Frenh Oak on its own it holds its own,in short they both are great.

    Well done and pictured. Peter

    Cool New Pens

    Beautifully made pens both!
    Some thoughts;
    • I'm not sure that that kit knows what it wants to be. I think its design is an aggregation of several design features that don't quite gel.
    • The kingwood is gorgeous but I'm wondering if the ridge at the nib end isn't a little misplaced on a thicker style pen like this.
    • Would that ridge get in the way of a comfortable grip?

Thanks guys, gave me a few things to think about.
The oak is growing on me - I've got another piece so I'll see what I can do with that one...

    artme,
I've seen a couple of comments on this kit to that effect - I suspect it may be the way the ornamental bands swap between gold and chrome that throws some people. Dont mind it myself, but I had a devious thought of getting one of each colour scheme and swapping the ornamental bands to get one completely gold and one completely chrome kit. might make some of the features flow together a bit better?

The ridge at the nib is actually a fair way back. hard to gauge from the photos, but i've placed it so it starts to rise just at the rear of the pad of the thumb. Well, it does for the way I hold a pen, anyway - ergonomics for other people may vary. It was a bit higher (ie the ridge tip was fatter) when I first started shaping it on the lathe - had to make it a more subtle profile with the wide body, otherwise it looked like it came out of a flash gordon movie .

    penpal,
Amen on the dark timber - I'm developing an unhealth fascination with latin american rosewoods - it's going to spell certain doom for the credit card!

    cheers
