    Hi Plant,

If I may demistify with my simple set up I use in my lounge, set up time 5 mins.

My set up uses no diffusers whatever merely an open box made with a 50mm foam board base and conduit 20mm with fittings indeed using non inspection fittings cheaper still. Please note the design allows ease of movement is light as parks easily on top of a tall display cabinet in the lounge. The top light sits on the conduit and the other two on tripods. These days cheap as purchased from Bunnies reflectors, tripods and 40 watt biggies power saver lamps or others to choose from already giving diffused light.

I use Picassa3 and yes there are wrinkles to know how to and while my daughter is visiting I will learn more one such wrinkle is when you size your pic etc etc then go to file and Save as a copy this will hold your settings you make.

Look up my pen pics make your own judgement.

Now this is for starters then go technical in your own time at whatever speed you wish I am a photographer of well over 40 yrs and I am here for pens.

Enjoy the journey hope this helps Peter.

If it is a Digital SLR camera Macro there should be no need to turn the macro "on" as it just part of the lens. Some cameras have a setting for "closeups" which just assumes the subject will be stationary so restricts the shutter speed to slower speeds which forces the aperture to become narrower so more of the image is in focus. However, if you have full aperture and shutter speed control it is better to take total control and use a tripod, the smallest aperture available. Just looking through the lens or a small LCD screen doesn't reallly show what is or is not in focus so taking the photo and zooming in is essential. An alternative is to use a Depth of field calculator or table. If you shoot out and about there are several Depth of field Apps available and I had one on my mobile but I prefer to use an on line table.

Most depth of field tables show the depth of field for different apertures, distance to subjects and lens focal length and are a PITA if you just want to take photos.
Recently I found this very simple table which works on the size of the object being photographed - to use it you do need to know the size of the CCD in the camera which can usually be found in the camera specs handbook. One big advantage of this table is it shows the DOF right down to sub millimetre distances.
