One Piece Slimline & a couple of bolt actions
Well I tried my 1st one piece slimline today.
Turned out ok but not good enough to sell, which is a pity as the burl I used (only big enough for a SL) turned out nice.
Another pen for me!
Issues I have had is
a) Getting to the refill
b) Mechanism is very tight to turn
c) slightly off centre at one end courtesy of a bent mandrel (now fixed)
Bolt Actions are
Osage Orange - Orange ###???? try Yellow! I think the botanist who named this one was colour blind! The shavings match the yellow of my woodfast lathe.
Sandalwood
Rosebush - managed to save a piece or two after the dogs decided to chew them up. Very interesting figure in it.
Thanks for looking.
Shawn

Not familiar with the one piece. Looks good.
From the pics I can't see why they are not for sale.

Shawn , these are a long way to drill with a 7 mm drill and in burls and similar materials , it can wander off course as it hits harder and softer patches, especially if the drill is not sharpened properly You may even end up with a bent hole at times. I have not done one of these as yet,but when I get around to it I most likely would use a slim tube inside the next size up tube ,and do it more as a streamline, I like the one piece concept so might have a play good that you took the challenge though, so many of these kits are really just too easy to be a challenge Cheers ~ John

Great looking quartet there Shawn!!!
That rosebush looks interesting. The rootball of roses is, apparently, very interesting to turn.

great job on all the pens, i like John have never done a one piece slim, i think he stole my thoughts about how to do it, i might get there one day but i am in no hurry
the Osage starts out very yellow most of the time, but the UV light will turn it brown eventually, if you are displaying it in a box then make sure you turn it around occasionally or you will end up with a dark yellow side and a bright yellow side, don't ask....DAHMIT
all the best

I agree John, long way to drill in difficult timbers and I did not have a lot of wiggle room with this piece as it was rectangular (~15mm x 9mm).
I took inspiration from the pen I got from Double E Creations as part of this years pen swap (his was closed end though) and I wanted to keep the clip.
Cheers

Just figured out how to do the Multi Quote Reply.
Dave the one piece is just a slimline without the separation in the middle. Glue in the top tube and do not glue the bottom tube in otherwise you wont be able to change the refill. The friction fit of the mechanism holds the bottom tube in. Due to not having much too grip to change the refill some fiddling is needed with the fit otherwise you wont get it out. I had to use my vice to remove it whilst trial fitting etc.
The two bolt actions will be for sale. The one Piece wont be as I'm a real fussy self critical B (aren't we all) on myself when it comes to things like that. There is stuff I let slide as unless you are looking for issues you will never see it but the obvious stuff (well obvious to me) I wont sell and I use as samples or for myself.
Thanks Artme,
I have the root ball waiting....what this space...one day
Thanks for the heads up MIK on the OO. Will make sure I mention that it will darken over time due to UV exposure if someone buys it.
Cheers

hi shawn , looking at the pic i can see some solution to your problems
#1 i notice that you have the centreband attached to pen at the nib its not used in making these pens
#2 before you drilled it did you measure the blank to see if it is long enough ( to do this moded pen the blank MUST be the length of BOTH tubes AND the CENTRE BAND as well )
if not thats a possibility that its hard to turn
#3 when you make these you glue only one tube in at clip end but not at nib end BUT when you mount blank on mandrel to turn you MUST put other tube in bottom end or it can and probibliy will be out of round
if you still having trouble with these just click the link under my signature and it will take you to a tutorial i have on on this and if you want there is a pdf of it as well
hope that helps you out

Mkypenturner,
#1 Yep the centre band is not from that kit. I had to modify it to make it fit.
#2 The blank was not long enough but still had enough clearance for it all to work. Reason for the tightness (what I think) is the superglue I put inside to help strengthen the pen. I will take it apart and run a drill back down the front end of the pen by hand to try to get it a bit more clearance so it doesnt grab.
Cheers
Shawn
#3 I did use the other tube to stabilise the blank to turn it. But the mandrel was slightly bent hence it being out.
