First Pine Cone Pen
Well, I finally stuffed a pine cone in the pot today to see what I could do with it. Not sure what kind of cone it is, picked it up off the street while walking the dog the other day. This was really fun, I'll be doing more of these for sure. I really like the pattern, reminds me of wooden snake scales.
Cast in pearlized PR. Can't really see the pearl in the pictures, mostly gold and bronze with some macro pearl thrown in.
Kit is a satin gold Carbera (Berea) from Bear Tooth Woods.

Karl, it is a beauty, I think that is the answer with the pine cones, Put then in resin, now I will have to give that a go, Amos

Yeah, with the resin casting, the trickiest part about the whole thing was making sure to drill right through the center of the cone afterwards. Other than that, it was a pretty standard turning, little CA fill here and there, and then a CA topcoat. I'm going to be hunting cones from now on!

Great looking pen Karl It really does have a scale look about it.
Can you post a piccy of the pine cone when you get another one, I assume it is a small cone, the pens I've made from pine cones have an entirely different look. Plenty of different cones about though, so I'd love to find one like yours that produces that scale grain look.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

I'll look for some more cones that are similar, I need to get some more anyways. This one was maybe 2" around, fully opened, and the little 'petals' were very thin at the outside. I think it was about 5 1/2" long.

Oh man!! So much to learn. Resin. Pearlized. You guys are talking martian. Did my first two pens the other day. (pics coming but wife has the camera in China with her.) But every thread I read there is more to learn. I'm not even going to ask for an explanation of this technique yet.
Beautiful pen Karl. Just beautiful.
