Default Playing in the shed - Todays Results

More shed cleaning and a little turning.

1 x Blowout really nice figure as well. Oh well will have to start the ADPS Pen again!

    1 x Bolt Action P1010008.JPG

And whilst milling up some conkerberry this revealed itself P1010006.JPG so I've decided to keep it as is so just hit it with some wax. It has a really nice orange colour to it. photo doesn't do it justice. Have gone all out with a name for it...... Conkerberry Sad Face

Hey Shawn, nice work on the BA(bolt action) and the BO (blow out) of course that piece of CB (conkerberry) is just rubbish as you said, so just send it to me. I've got a pot belly and I've got a "steel fireplace" in my shed. I'll look after it for you. That's the very nice person I am.

    cheers

    Default Today (ok and Yesterday)

    Today's productive efforts.

    P1010018.JPG

Both Bolt Actions are in Jim Beam Whiskey Barrel Oak and the Lucida is in Conkerberry.
Plenty of non-productive "I will learn from this mistake ".....maybe.

Some mistakes are way too much fun to only make once.

    Cheers

They look great Shawn Mistakes are always fun to repair but hardly worth the time in a lot of cases.

I agree...but sometimes we have to try to fix them, especially out here.

Currently have a commission (ok make that a donation) that I am working on, 21 pens (with labels) & a couple of perfume bottles to have done by end of March.
Needless to say at the current rate of about 5-6 hours each pen I wont get much sleep.

    Default Tonight's Turnings

I finally found a couple of hours to play in the shed tonight.

Thought I would give the Abalone Blank from Burl1 a go.

My photo skills are still P&S or should that be PP.

    Shawn,

Share your sentiments clean up the shed a little turning. Liked your pens. the faceted Abalone pic was perhaps the better of many so far from anyone and I too have one to turn then go through the exercise of taking pictures. The Conkerberry timber is my nemesis those rotten termites have the same passion for it as I do however your blank has other issues also common in Conkerberry and I have simply sat it as is in front of my desk just because I love the colours not the defects. I have a small swag of cross cut bits waiting for me cant explain just how this Conkerberry has a hold on me.

Was able to make a printed circuit board pen just as excited by that now to complete my cleaning up further, I found lots of finishing stuff has gone hard, dried up etc so went on a binge buying more yesterday.

Had a rare experience in northern NSW years ago was able to dip in to a huge pallet of Conkerberry all that was left of four pallets from a pro turner who had given up turning to go to South Africa on a mission with his young family and about to leave. He showed me items he had in his gallery of Conkerberry up to a foot across the images are seared in my mind to this day some of the greatest art ever. The stuff I bought from him was the dregs, hollow, misshapen etc however for many years revived those exquisite memories of his craft. I have never seen such quantity of Conkerberry since. From a mate of mine who used to travel out and collect it his description of delving into small forests of it the injuries he sustained from the wicked thorns etc has given me a true appreciation of this unique Aussie treasure.

Thanks fo stirring up the memories from your pens and Conkerberry. Do you live in an area of figured Sandalwood? if so send me a pm my efforts through the commercial harvesters has been either my descriptions are inadequate or whatever my previous purchases were very ordinary to say the least since they grind most of it up grain, figure are meaningless to them.

    Kind regards Peter.

The conkerberry would make a beautiful pen, it would need CA before drilling, and CA during turning. Amos

    Hi Peter,

Not sure on the figured sandalwood but it (Sandalwood) grows all around here, even have several trees currently in flower around the mine site I work at.

I am going to talk to the local Government Butterfly Department to see if I can go in after the commecial haversters have been through an area, and pick up what they waste. They only take the main trunk and leave the branches behind. Some of these are big enough to allow a pen to be made. I have a couple of people there I deal with through work so hopefully I can sweet talk them into allowing me to do this.

    Cheers

Certainly does Amos, although I haven't needed to do the CA before drilling or during the turning.

I am now just dabbling with casting so once I build a pressure pot I will have a go casting the WW conkerberry I have and see what results I get.
