poly in cold weather.
hi all,
for those that use wipe on poly as a finish, how does it perform in cold weather? Now that the weather is cooling it seems my pens are taking longer to dry. How much of a difference does cold weather make to drying time? I did some up on saturday and they're still not quite there.
Will it affect the durability of the final finish? As a counter measure to the cold, would putting the pens in the same room as a heater be too much heat? I'm not planning on putting them right in front of one (nor am i planning on using a heater just yet!) but just in the general vicinity. Has anyone tried this? For those who live near me, you've got a good idea of how our winters get so any advice would be much appreciate. thanks in advance.

does it get cold in Ipswich?
My old man said anything south of the border was cold and that was when he moved to Ipswich in '86 (or was it '85?)regards

can do. Of a night time it's getting cool already. I should have mentioned that my problem is compounded by having my garage as a work shop. It's freezing in there come july. I don't have many areas i can put things in the sun either. I live in a townhouse block and the only private outdoor area i have is covered over.

Since Ipswich is a bit inland it certainly does get cold. In fact it gets much hotter there in summer than in Brisbane and very much colder in winter.

The cold does cause some problem with the WOP but it should be set by now. I would think you have rum into an oily blank and that is stopping the WOP setting. Seal it with shellawax or wipe of with turps or solvent before you applying the WOP. I only live a stones throw away and have no trouble even now with cold coming in.
I do have a nice warm place in the sun though.

i seal all of my pens with shellac before using the poly so oil shouldn't be a problem. I'm wondering if there is too much moisture in my garage. There's a fair amount of wet timber in there so maybe as that dries it's creating a sort of humid environment. This won't be a problem in a couple of weeks when my father completes his shed and takes his timber back i'll let you know if this makes a difference. I think i really need to put them in the sun though.
